Double check the basics:
Are the batteries and memory card inserted correctly?
Is the battery door closed?
Does the LCD show an image when the camera is turned on?
Is the mode switch set to shooting? (up position, pointing to the camera icon)

The camera was released after august 2007, so the included batteries more likely are still fresh, but using a new set of knowingly fresh/charged batteries may help.

Re-read the basics on pages 8 to 14. After that, the instructions on pages 15 and 16 are all you need to shot an image.

Troubleshooting on page 158 of the User Guide may help.

Can you see the menus when you hit the Menu button? Can you set parameters when you use the rocker switches or the Disp button?

Sounds like you need to contact the vendor and return or exchange it then.

is the 5th number a 5 or a 6 in the serial code at the bottom? there were complaints of cameras not working cause of a manufacturing error.... i forgot cause my camera was safe, but the earlier ones suffered a problem.
