What a snout! :)
Makes me wonder what the set up looked like when you got this amazing shot.
Hmm...camera mounted on a tripod in front of a leaf, then waiting, waiting and waiting for a fly to land just on the right spot... hmm

Great shot for a one shot chance.

Thats a hoverfly, either Rihingia campestris or Rhingia rostrata - difficult to say without seeing the back, but more likely to be campestris I would think. Brian might know for sure as he sees these in his garden.

never..i never wait around.i have this row of nettles in back of my house..the row must be about 30 meters long.what i do is go out with just the camera..i never use a tripod.there to much trouble setting them up and tbh 90% of y shots are on the ground any way..i lye down resting the camera on the floor or my hand..i walk up and down looking really hard at the nettles..when i find something il try and get it to walk on a honey coated leaf.this is on a over cast day tho..if it was a hot midday sun i wouldn't stand a chance, flys are dosy when there cold.some flys will sit on the leaf licking up the honey for 20 mins but this guy had 1 lick then flew off.

Thanks for elaborating on this. What were the camera settings?
I always find the story/set up behind the shot interesting and very educating.

Now, I have the camera and I have lens - hmm there's a lot of practice to be done :D

Most of these are taken at some local estate gardens, £25 for a season ticket, march till september, they have really well maintained gardens and they dont use and chemicals so lots of bugs :-)
