I would like to see Canon allows customers to customize the lens while ordering like how we do for Laptops (notebooks). If we can customize the notebooks to our configuration, why not Lens!!!
Hope I would see this happen one day, May be atleast by 2020!!!

Funny but I dont see how that would work. Only thing I could see you would be able to customise is colour.

I dont think you would be able to customise a 70-200 2.8 IS to a 70-250 1.5L IS.

If they could, say goodbye to your wallet. :D

Lenses use advanced optical physics with specially prepared lens elements, while computers use modular printed circuit boards that can be easily inserted or removed and are mass produced. Can't see it working without having to sell a kidney to pay for it.

As an Applied Physics major myself, customized lens takes a lot of time. It will take some time for optical testing and optical thin film coating. It's not easy. That is there are blue prints. hehehe

Too late I already offer custom lens services!

I'll turn any ultra-wide angle or wide angle L lens into a lens approximately the same size, shape, and weight as the 18-55mm.
And any telephoto or even super-telephoto L lens into a lens approximately the same size, shape, and weight as the 75-300mm.

Not only will I reduce the size and weight of your L lenses, I'll do it for free! Just pay shipping and I'll do it out of the kindness of my heart.

Note: You will not get your old lens back. Why would you want it anyways? It's big and heavy..

Because lenses are an assload harder to produce lol. Laptops and computers in general are very easy to throw together.

Simple tip for UK folk - Turn your lens into an L by simply placing a red rubber band around the end (Courtesy of your postman dropping trails of them on your drive of course).
