I have read many times that the 85 /1.8 is also a good portrait lens.

Hmmm.............the 50 f1.4.............or maybe the 35 f1.4.

It's got to be a prime..............if you have space, I would even suggest the 85 f1.2 L.

I think an L prime will give you more contrast with better color rendition.

...............but this is arguable.............almost all Canon prime lenses are of very good quality.

This is a great portrait lens, however it is probably too long for a portrait of 2 people.

Boy, I drool over that 35F1.4 lens. So nice!

Because it will be used with a full frame sensor, the 85mm f/1.8 will work nicely.

Oh yeah!
For some reason I read "1DMKII" and assumed a 1.3x crop.
So the 85F1.8 or 85F1.2 might be the way to go.

You read partly right. SSA is deciding between DS and MKII. Full-frame v. 1.3x

OOHhhh!!! 16mpx..........full frame............you need the best and the sharpest...............85 f1.2 L will probably be the only way to go.

I REALLY like the 28-70 2.8L on my MKII in the studio. Its very sharp and the zoom range works well

Might as well add my experience.

the 50/1.4 or 28-70L were perfect on my 10D, but since I have upgraded to 1DsMkII, the 28-70 does not always get in close enough for a head shot so I am planing on upgrading to 85mm or 135mm lens in near future.

As to 85/1.2 or 85/1.8 I tend to lean towards biggest aperture when ever possible, but have read some things that make me lean towards 85/1.8.

however, I have also heard great things about 135/2

So I suppose it will depend on how much room you have in studio, but I lean towards the 85mm size as a minimum for portraits.

Someone I trust to give good advice once told me that the best portraits are taken with the longest lens you can get away with.

The 70-200/2.8 lenses would also come to mind

What about the 135/2.8 SF? Supposed to be an affordable quality lens, with the SF effect as an additional possibility for portraits.

Best regards,
Andy

Hmmm, RFM, he doesn't say WHICH MKII camera?
He said the 1DS or the MKII. Those could both be the 1DS.
I assumed he meant 1DS and 1DSMKII.
