5 foot umbrella on a 6 foot light stand? Will it look disproportional? Im shooting group shots for my coworkers graduation party on may 10th and im planning on ordering 6 foot light stands, 60 inch (5foot) umbrellas, and umbrella/flash mounts. Im going to get 2 sets of these and arrange them to liking..

but anyways back to the original question. Is there much of a difference between a 45 inch white umbrella and a 60 inch umbrella? Will it look awkward to have a big 60 inch umbrella on a 6 foot lightstand?

Also, what set up would u shoo for group shots anywhere from 2-15 people.

I will be using any one of these lens. 24-70L , 16-35L, or a 10-22. background will just be whatever there… any wall.

thanks for any responses.

I don't care what the setup looks like as long as it gives me the results :) But why only the 6 foot stand? Most of the 6 footers are light duty and might not handle the 60" that securely. You can always get the taller and more hevey duty stands and just extend them to 6'.

A six foot umbrella will only extend three feet below the top of a six foot stand. By the same token, the top will reach to nine feet above the ground on a six foot stand. You may be up against ceiling height at that point unless you are blessed with ceilings taller than eight feet. As Lotto said, I would worry more about whether the stands will be sturdy enough, but even then, you aren't supporting a giant soft box. Where the weakness of the stands is likely to show up is later on after a number of setups and tear downs.

Whether 45 inch umbrellas or 60 inch umbrellas is the better choice boils down to taste and whether or not your light will actually fill the umbrella.
