How do you get all these varieties of bugs to come to your yard? I only have a small amount of species that I ever even see. What's your secrets?

Waiting.
Don't forget different regions, even in the same city have different variety of insects and wild life. My dad lives 20 Min away from me, and his yard is teaming with life of all sorts. Mine... a whole lot of waiting for just a few!

when I find different bugs it is usually because I have let the weeds grow for a while in one area of my yard, then when I finally get around to pulling them there is all sorts of stuff hiding in them. You just have to be careful, because when the wife sees me going out to pull weeds with my camera she gets mad. Only a couple of weeds get pulled, but I am getting some practice at macro!

I have a lot of bushy cover in my garden and also tend to throw all the garden clippings back onto the garden which also provides cover. You also need a fairly steady progression of things flowering during the year to attract the nectar/pollen feeders. Hebes and potentillas are good for this, and of course no insectacide use.

have alot of plants. My grandpa grows baby apple trees at our house and moves them to his ranch, also peach, kumquat, orange and a whole bunch of bushes. The usual bugs are lady bugs, bees, beetles, spiders, a bunch of different moths and butterflies, flies, wasps, yellow jackets, some weirdo bug that looks like a ladybug but bigger and flatter...whole bunch of others. Just have lots of plants and flowers. Theyll come running to you
