So I drug my 70-200 f4L with the camera set on iso 3200 and managed to pull off good enough shots from the stands with it to get a press pass for college b-ball (my schools go the #13 point guard in the nation now and a pretty damn good team), but yeah, now that I am on the floor, f4 really cant take it...the 70-200 f2.8 is out of my price range...and the zoom isnt really needed

any suggestions?

I was thinking the TAMRON 28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di might be a good choice...i need the 2.8 badly

Yeah - but can you live with 75 as your long end? Try a practice or something with the 70-200 at the short end . . . Maybe the Sigma 70-200 or the Tokina 80-200 f/2.8s?

I'll be under the net most of the time though so people should be fairly close, the 70 is too close. the 200 gets me across the court though, which is fun sometimes...but not really needed. I cant cover everything at once. Multitasking and me dont get along.

I think you need to get that rebel back so you have 2 bodys one for each lens, it is going to kill you trying to change lenses, each time they go down the court Give the 70-200 a go on the floor, you mucht have a tad better time with the light there. You are going to need a LOT more than 70mm IMO

I really like the Sigma 70-200 2.8. Its going to be twice as much as the Tamron though.

I have the 50 1.8 but I am lookin for a little more freedom from the prime for when I might be right under goal

I go to East Tenn State University...mid size school, not much special other than the basketball and golf team...

Even if it ends up NOT being the perfect solution.. it certainly won't hurt to have it in your bag.

IMHO.. the best solution would be eventually two bodies.

In which case you could do any of a number of combos including a pair of f/2.8 zooms (28-75mm and 70-200mm f/2.8)

Or a pair of primes, 85 or 135mm and 28 or 35mm... or a zoom and a prime etc...

But thats down the road. :oops: :roll: :wink:

After following the threads about TAMRON 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di lens for the past few weeks I think it would be a good choice. Tamron is offering a $30.00 dollar mail in rebate which would bring the cost down to $339.99 if you order from B&H.

thanks...I was really leaning towards the tamron but I would be pissed if the f2.8 cant cut it under the lights...I researched the 85mm f1.8 and decided to go with it plus I have the 50mm f1.8 already. I love primes...lets just hope I dont knock other people over trying to move for a different shot...haha.

I cant cover the whole court and I will just have to learn to accept that...haha...yeeesh...i wish i was superman sometimes

although I really want the 50mm f1.4 for my 35mm...grrr...i need a bigger paycheck, or a 3rd job! haha

Just to add to your dilemma... I also used the 135mm f/2 for some of the shots... it's a beauty of a lens and gives you enough scope to work half the court - something else to add to the shopping list!

My struggle rcently has been that the venues are soooooo dark that even my f/2.8 lenses have been rendered as good as useless - a real pain.

I mostly do sports. I largely use the sigma 70-200 f2.8 as most of the venues I'm in have no room for positioning yourself under the basket. My Tamron lens is new to me... but it's pretty cool too.

At ISO 3200 usually no gym is too dark. I have been able to get away with 1/350, but will usually get a little motion blur on the ball.

Now, if you want a tough sport to cover... try volleyball. Hockey is no walk in the park either. At in least in a gym you can stay warm! :)

I HIGHLY recommend the 85 F1.8 lens.
The optical quality is awesome, and it's focus is probably the fastest of any lens I've used.
