After 3 days of research, I have to ask this VERY basic question. I'm just starting to experiment with photography. After reasding plently here, I got myself a g9, with the 58mm adapter. My question is how do i know which lens will work with or are compatiable? Every lens I look at generally says something like "Compatiable with canon SLR's" I've been looking at a used Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens (only because I've heard good things, and thats at the top of my price range).
BTW, I'm willing to take a beating on this post:rolleyes:
Thanks in advance.

Ooh, I think you're in for a bit of a shock here. The only 'lens's you can add to the G9 are the adapters like the 58mm you mentioned, I'm pretty sure the G9 doesn't have a detachable main lens.
Someone feel free to correct me, I dont have a G9

Main lens is not detachable, but i was under the impression i could add a lens for different needs?

I've just had a look on ebay. You can screw on adapters on the front of your lens. As the main lens is not detachable these are your only options.
The lens you are looking at is for SLR's, on the SLR the whole lens can be taken off and replaced with a completely different one. When that lens is off you can actually see inside the camera, the mirror and everything. These cameras have a lens mount (the EF-S part of the lens you mentioned). The G9 attaches the adapters onto the filter screw-on bit at the front, but it still uses the main lens that comes with the G9.
I hope you see what I'm getting at here, I don't think I've explained it particularly well.
If you have a look here (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CANON-EOS-400D-BODY-BLACK_W0QQitemZ360046103972QQihZ023QQcategoryZ3006 6QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) he has a picture of an SLR with the lens detached
EDIT: that said. you are correct in that you can add adapters for different needs (macro for example to focus on very close objects). But the lens you have mentioned will not work on your camera. Do an ebay search for G9 lens (http://search.ebay.com.au/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=1&from=R40&satitle=g9+lens&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=6065&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1) and you will see whats available.

Thanks for taking the time, that pretty much clears things up. I knew the main lens of the g9 is what it is, but thought i could "add-on" which apparently i can, but adapters, not lenses.. thanks Now I dont really understand what the adapters are for? just to add filters maybe and some macro lens?

I believe there is a telephoto and a wide angle lens that will screw into the adaptor. And you have to tell the camera which one is on. Read your manual.

The adapters will increase the range of what you can do with the G9. For example, a telephoto adapter will let you zoom further, at the expense of being able to zoom out as far (essentially you are putting a magnifying glass in front of the camera). Think bird watching (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=91).
A wide-angle adapter will let you zoom out further than before, at the expense of being able to zoom in. Think Landscapes (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=28)
A macro adapter will let you bring your camera right up close and still focus on it. Useful for capturing details in flowers, insects etc. See the Macro (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=38) subforum for examples.
If you've only recently picked up your G9 I would suggest not getting anything for it right away. Have a play with it and see what you like doing. If you always seem to be zoomed out as far as you can go you might consider a wide-angle adapter for example. And of course, keep reading around here and you are sure to pick up an awful lot in a short time :)

i just bought my set of lenses today...and i know the rim of the lens can be seen around the picture on both the wide and tele converters. for the wide converter, u have to zoom in a bit to get rid of the rim, but wen i do so the wideness of the picture is not so much as the original

The reason, as stated on your other thread, is due to the fact that you purchased cheap converter lenses, instead of the Canon (or other high quality) lenses. Samples of what you should expect are shown on the Lensmate website for the wide angle options;
http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/G7wide.html
You can also get high quality Raynox lenses, as discussed in this blog;

Without buying anything else, you can learn and practice using the Canon Photostitch software that comes with the G9, and other Powershot cameras. This article explains it;

And, as an art student, you may appreciate this article by the same person;
