Photography shops in Montreal/Quebec??

Hello All,

I'm heading across to Montreal from the UK in june, and wondering how the prices for photo gear compare to the UK, I'm guessing it cheaper over there the in the UK.

Can anyone reccomend a Chop in the Montreal/Quebec city region?

The big boy is L.L Lozeau at 6229 Saint-Hubert.

It's pretty much the shop the most pro's shop at as they have the best inventory it would seem.

However, their prices are considerably more than B&H in New York. For example, an EF 10-22 lens is about $850 (+13% tax) here in Canada, and about $680 at B&H. I bought my 40D there (at roughly $200 more than B&H at the time) since I wanted a local place to go if anything went wrong. But all my lenses and other equipment come from the USA or here on POTN from other members. Another example... the 70-200 f/2.8 IS was in the $1700 ballpark at B&H and was just over $2100 locally.

Hey Bouncing, luck you I bumped into this thread! I lived in Montreal for 10 years and now live in London.

You won't find great savings in Canada on camera gear. Canon Canada are right ^$#^@ and give little leeway to retailers as well as provide quite terrible customer care. If you insist however there is LL.Lozeau and Photo Service in the Old Port which was my choice when I was local.

As for places to shoot in Montreal, June is an excellent time. The Old Port is my favourite corner of the city in the summer however don't forget to check out St Joseph's Oratory, Mont Royal Lookout, and of course Crescent Street when they close it down for the F1 and other events over the summer.

Thanks TeeTee. I'm going early June, doing the F1, but staying in Quebec, the £300+ per night for a hotel, going to go back to montreal at the end of the stay, also spenign a bit of time in the laurentian's.

You may want to check out Simon's and there is another place on Notre Dame just befor St Laurent. Can't comment on the prices but they are very friendly.

As for shooting you may be a little early for the Jazz Festival, but Old Montreal is always good and you may want to take a stroll around Griffintown before they start re-developing it. Some interesting buildings and doorways.

Lots of Churches, Notre Dame, Mary Queen of the World, St James United, Christ Church all around the downtown area.

There is no-where better than PhotoService. When they're busy, it does take long to be served, but when you are, you get the best service & information anywhere. Worth the wait, and their prices are awesome

I wouldn't go near drug store printing if you are after quality. There are several high quality labs that will cost you a few more pennies per print. Money well spent in my opinion.

When I lived in Montreal I bought very little there due to the taxes. It was much easier to buy from an out of province retailer that didn't charge the local provincial taxes. In fact if it hadn't been for the high taxes in that province I would have gladly retired there. I miss the city tremendously. I did frequent Louzeau and Photoservice. I did find it difficult to get served by someone that had a good command of the english language at Photoservice. That is not a slam, just the way it is at some establishments. They do have an excellent selection of everything as does Louzeau. I did get the feeling that Photoservice was more atuned to serving the pro and prosumer markets.

I don't know of any particular Jazz clubs but if you are downtown you will find a wide selection of clubs and bars along Ste. Catherine street.
