Tokina AT-X 100 PRO D AF 100mm f/2.8
Going to spark up an archive of this bad boy. Just got it in today and I am very very impressed.
Build quality is second to none. Better than my current or previous Sigmas, better than all the black Canon L's I have or have had.
AF speed is pretty good for a macro. It's not Canon 100mm macro USM speed, or even 50mm 1.4 speed but I think it could keep up with ring USM with the focus limiter switch on.
Lens is recessed nicely so that you don't even need the included hood. It uses a 55mm filter size, how cheap are those? So cheap, I can use my Vivitar CPL from my Canon F-1.
Focus accuracy is perfect.
I shot f2.8, f4, f5.6, and f8 at ISO 400 in RAW+L and they look beautiful! Eh, it was a crappy Balance Bar wrapper at about 1:1 but still.
More to come, I just can't post pics at work. But I'll certainly take some more tonight and post 'em up!
Edit***Turns out my copy front focuses at distance (20ft +) and beyond. Great build, sharp macro, exchanged for a different based on Tokina Repairs advice.

I had one but sold it b/c it's too long on a cropped sensor for my needs.
Otherwise, a great lens.

Sounds like a good one, and according to tests on Photozone.de it actually measures higher in terms of resolution that a Sigma 105mm macro. However I did see a sample photo demonstrating fairly severe CA. Do you find this to be the case?
Mr. Clean
22nd of May 2008 (Thu), 23:20
You know there's some CA in the pic of my backyard around the white flowers. Honestly though I haven't shot it enough or in the right conditions to really push the CA. I did shoot a jasmine flower and there was a bit of CA, but it's really not that bad.
Mr. Clean
23rd of May 2008 (Fri), 13:28
Hmmm, I can't really keep the CA in the shots. Processing the files from RAW to JPEG really handles it, heck pretty much eliminates it. Not a CA example but a decent shot nonetheless.

Tokina makes unbelievable equipment. I really wish they'd come out with a 24-70 or a silent focusing motor. I'm still astounded at the build quality and optical excellence in my 10-17.

do you use Auto Focus at all? when i did,i noticed it drained batteries fast!
do you mind the extending tube at all?
Mr. Clean
5th of June 2008 (Thu), 18:48
Thanks for the kind words!
I probably AF half the time when I use it. Something really close like this one, which I think was 1:1, I would manual focus.
You know, although aethetically I don't like the extending tube, the design of the lens and tube eliminates the need to use a hood since the front element is recessed so far back.
Mathiau
6th of June 2008 (Fri), 00:24
yup, i did use the hood now and then, usuaully in positions if it was slightly raining out, cover the body and have the hood out to get a shot..
i use AF alot when i first got it, then more or less soley went to MF, the extended tueb didnt bother me at all and from any review i could find seemed to be the only downfall of the lense, as well as the dc motor for focus

I just got this lens - love it so far. This lens reminds me so much of the Tamron 90mm I used to have for Pentax... the mechanical design seems almost the same, with the "feel" edge going to Tokina with the more solid "metal" feel. I have no idea how similar or different the design of the optics are, but the Tokina seems to be great in this dept. too.
I haven't used it as a macro too much, but it's great for portraits too...

Very nice indeed. Excellent bokeh on that lens.
Just got one yesterday and I must say that I'm extremely impressed with the build and optics quality. My only complaints aren't related to the lens but to the nature of macro photography (very challenging to shoot handheld at 100mm with the necessary DOF). I'm sure there's a lot of info out there on the topic.
But overall, crazy value in my opinion.

Yeah, at true macro distances, handheld is pretty tough - a tripod is a big help...
I got one shot with this lens out walking today, before my son decided he was heading back to the truck and wandered around the bend in the trail - I had to run (he's two and getting fast)... Anyway, a not too special shot of a California Poppy...

I cannot compare because I have not used the others BUT in terms of picture and build quality(metal) this lens is fantastic! And the price is great compared to others...
Tokina is growing very popular these days and it's quite difficult to get your hands on them which to me proves that they must be good. This is why I took a chance on this lens and I couldn't be happier.
I am now looking for a decent priced UWA Tokina 11-16 but they are very hard to find which again proves the quality and popularity of these lenses....
I say if you're in the market for a decent quality and priced Macro then this lens is worth looking at...

I haven't hold the Tokina yet, but from the Images I do like the look of it, both Tamron and Sigma are made of plastic. Simga looks the worst out of the 3.
There is one dealer in Chicago that might have this Tokina in stock, Might take a field trip in next few days.

Agreed on all counts. Had the sig 150 and would consider getting that again sometime. I like Tamron stuff overall, but the build isn't as rugged as the Tokina. I have an 11-16 and it's an awesome lens. Don't use this one near enough.....but need to get it out more.

Does the Tokina have some sort of USM/HSM motor? or is a bit louder/slower then some USM lenses?
rodleviton

Yes it does have a motor. Again I can't compare to others but I find it fast and quiet enough for my needs...Best thing to do is pop into a camera shop and see if you can handle and play with all the lenses you are interested in and take it from there....

I'm really on a learning curve with this lens. Strong, solid build but I've gotten so used to being close to the subject (physically) with a 50mm + extension tubes or with the lens reversed, that's I now have to remember to step back to take the shot.
