Well I am still searching, and this is hard for me to say as being a Canon Person, but I pretty much have ruled out the Canon S5is, even though I found the Raw Hack for it, and the only reason why I would choose it is because of its video capabilities. I have narrowed it down to two the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 and the Olympus SP-570 UZ –or the 560. I have also been toying with the Canon G9 if I can find it cheap enough, though I feel that it does not have a wide enough lens. Does anyone have either the Olympus SP-570 UZ –or the 560- or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, if so I would love to hear from you.
Thanks, Kevin

What's your price range? Have you looked at the Fuji camera's? They are noted for their high iso performance. What about the Sigma DP-1? P&S that uses an APS-C style format, with an excellent fixed lens.
My wife has a SD550, and I've been amazed at some of the pictures it has produced. That camera is about 3 years old, so I'm sure the newest versions of the SD camera's are even better.

As of right now the Canon S5is is back on the table, because I realized that If I bought the wide angle converter lens and the adapter it would cost as much as the Olympus SP-570 UZ, and have some good video capabilities, and also a few days ago I came across the site that has the raw Hack for the S5is. Does any one use the wide angle converter lens with the S5is, or has any one used the Raw Hack does it really enable Raw shooting - not to mention other useful features- if so what are your thoughts. I am also interested to hear from anyone who uses the Olympus SP-570 UZ, or the 560.
Thanks, Kevin.

A big hit for the Olympus SP-570UZ is that it does not shoot video with sound when the optical zoom is used. So the Canon S5is is looking better and better. I can get around some of the Canon S5is flaws, that’s why I also have my DSLR for those more difficult shots.

I've got a nice Quaker Oats container you can use. I've punched a hole in one side (about halfway up). All you need to do is load a 8x10 piece of print paper into it (in the dark, of course), and cover the hole with masking tape. Then when you see a shot you like, you uncover the hole. Cover it up after 10 seconds and process the print.
That's about as far from "too much" as I can get you.

Trust me at times that is like a damn good option... and a fun one at that. Though now I am back where I basically started with the Canon S5si and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, though which one. I am leaning toward the canon with the wide angle converter lens and the adapter, but that is starting to get a bit pricey. I know I am looking too deeply into this, but I would like some good video capability, and that is where the canon seems to take the lead. I am not looking to make full fledged documentaries, but having some video options would be great.
Thanks, Kevin

Hi! Hope you check this old thread and can give me some advise. I am about to buy a new S5IS and like "KJCS Photo' don't want to spend the money on canon lenses. I am only a P&S dummy, so thought I would try a couple of the cheaper Japan made lenses. I have, in the mail to me as I type, a 2nd hand , Digital Concepts (brand) 58mm 2 X tele, with 62 mm filter thread. It cost US$7 + postage down-under. So wont be a great loss if a mistake. Another seller is offering a Japan made Professional Digital (brand) 0.45 Wide, with macro, for not many more $'s. It to has the 58mm mount but is much wider at about 82 mm filter size.
Am I wasting my time and $'s? Or are some of these cheaper lenses a reasonable option? If so what are some of those to seek out?
Hope I am neither wasting your time nor waiting in vein.

New camera update
DO NOT EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM 86TH STREET PHOTO, THEY ARE A SCAM. Please see http://www.resellerratings.com/store/86th_Street_Photo_Video
Well with that said, I canceled my order this morning after visiting the above site, and before they gave me the run a round. I have since ordered the camera (a refurbished one- saved some money) from a site that I have used many times (Adorama), though unfortunately my camera is back ordered. I am supposed to be getting the wide angle converter lens and adapter today (ordered it from Beach Camera on Sunday – IMO they are also very good). It’s going to hurt to have the wide angle lens a week or so before the camera, but oh well. I will let you know when I get the camera.
Thanks, Kevin

Dumb old fart - love the name by the way, I received my wide angle lens this afternoon, though I do not have the S5is yet it has been on back order though I just checked my email and I had an email that said that it was being shipped today happy happy happy -only a one day back order now that is great-. To get back to the lens I realized that it would fit on some of my Canon XTI lenses. This opens up a whole new box of options for me when it comes to using my DSLR. This means that I am able to carry a one of my larger zoom lenes, but also I can put this lens on and have a wider angle, and some more reach (when I don’t need it is small enough to fit in a pocket). It also has a macro lens that is really neat so now I am able to take super macro shots with my XTI’s kit lens, or my other lenses that are threaded for 58mm filters and such. I was worried that the adapter tube was going to be plastic, though to my surprise it is metal. I was surprised at how heavy the lens is but I quickly got over that. Now I just can’t wait to get my S5is, because I think it is going to work really well. Just a word on my XTI kit lens when it is at its widest there is some vingeting, but that lens is wide any way -18mm-, Though on my 28-80mm it makes quite a difference, which is good to see because that hopefully means that it will work really well on the S5is.
Thanks, Kevin
