I would suggest trying a tighter crop to isolate the player, and the background is very distracting.

agree on the tighter crop,

did you shoot a series of this play?

if you did, how does it look when the umpire has taken off his mask? i would feel that the one where u can also see the umpire in the middle of removing his mask

Sadly, it wasn't a series. I was working on timing my shots rather than falling back on the ol' spray-and-pray, so I was trying to keep it to single shots just as an exercise.

I tried some tighter crops, but cutting off the catcher and ump just didn't look as natural to me. Here's the best I came up with, but feel free to take a whack at it if you've got a better idea. =)

i've learnt from my two attempts at baseball that the "spray and pray" method should be used but with controlled spraying, like 2 to 4 frames after you anticipate the timing, to cover the reaction following your anticipated shot you want to capture.

case in point, i think 2 frames following this burst, well, it might not be good, but you get an option to see if the umpire with his mask and all 3 subjects looking in the same general direction would give the image a different feel

I totally agree. Now that I'm getting the hang of the timing, I'll see if I can't force my finger to stay on the shutter for an extra second or two. Thanks!

I like the image, maybe cropping some of the right frame out, this way still keeping the action at home plate. A very nice image, thanks for sharing.
