I'm looking to hook this up to either a 10d or 1dmkII - not sure how well it would cope with canon cameras - perhaps a standard flash and softbox would be better??

Not ETTL compatible (manual flash only).
Based on the figures given: Distance = .5M at F/8 ISO 200, it has a Guide Number of 3 Meters.
D=GN/f at ISO 100
To get to ISO 100 from 200 you need to divide the distance by 1.4
.5/1.4=GN/8
GN=( .5 )( 8 )/1.4
GN=3M ( Max distance at ISO 100, f/1.0 )
A 420EX has a Guide Number of 42 Meters.
This is designed for close up work only.

First ...always check the flash trigger voltage before connecting any third-party flash to your EOS camera...

As the flash is not in the list, I'd inquire about it directly from the manufacturer. Theory says that it should be save ('designed for digital cameras') but it'S better to be safe than sorry ;)
Second ... it looks like a very nice add-on for product and close-up photography...
Best regards,
Andy
