How slow can you go? Using a light xt body with a plastic IS lens I wanted to see how slow I could go before I get blatant camera shake. I focused at 35mm on crop body and took snaps of the same thing over and over.

I can go 2 sec shutter speed without much camera shake, 3.2 sec you can start to see blur. At 5 sec its not even funny even my breathing threw the whole thing off.

I'm pathetic. At 35mm (crop) I can go to maybe 1/8 before my pictures become unacceptable.

The focal length of the lens will impact this, longer lens less time before shake is apparent.

Thats why i stipulated 35mm on a crop body and a lens with IS. However, feel free to post you best(slowest time) with the most difficult situation i.e. 300mm hand held in bed of truck on a dirt road :D

I can hold 400mm for 30 seconds and not have too many problems.

Yay, a pissing contest.

Who cares, work on improving your technique not showing it off. Also, IS is cheating and makes you sloppy if you don't concentrate.

.... And tripods force you to forget how to hold a camera properly.

Go read up on breathing techniques for marksman. I had a lot of practice with rifles and sniper techniques, that helps a lot. Take a breath, let it out, before you take your next breath, take the photo. You should be able to hold it for a few seconds before you need to start breathing again (you'll be able to hold your breath for a bit but your body will start moving in response to holding your breath past a certain time.)

I'll have to see how long an exposure I can get, I've done long shots (10 seconds+) supporting the camera on my knee and can probably get a long time if I really tried for it.

Here's what I'd LIKE to say to you, so you can pretend I didn't.

I only hope you develop some of the medical problems I've got now, something I never dreamed would happen at my young age of not quite 60. I have developed some pretty nasty shake problems, and along with arthritis, has pretty much stopped any unaided handheld photography WITHOUT, as you call it, "cheating."

Only 10 years ago, part of my job was climbing communications towers, and the rest of it was every bit as physical. Now I can barely walk. For the record, I used to be a fair shot with a big bore handgun. By big bore I mean something larger than .357

I had been trying to use some old manual lenses on my Xt, and finally bought a 100-400L IS. It took me one afternoon to realize this is what I needed.

DAMN I get tired of these judgemental prick's comments
