Because someone bought my 10D I switched to the 20D and to be honest I really like this machine.

Higher ISO's are indeed better than the 10D, and the write speed to my card is AMAZING, taking into account the files are bigger the write speed is indeed incredible, never hold that possible :D.

However the 18-55 lens is a bit of a letdown to be honest, offcourse what can you expect for € 50,00 (the more price for the kit), but I never expected colorfringing on high-contrast areas.
Anyone else noticed this ?
I will look more inot it this week but was curious if anyone else noticed it.

Greetings,
Frank

By the way I love the shuttersound :D.

THEY have to learn how to work with a lens.
Every wide angle is sensitive for lensflare (look at how the glass is sitting :D).

You can see lens flare in the viewfinder so reframe or change position if it's a problem.

I use the lens mostly inside or for buildings and have not ever found a problem with it.

Hey there, congrats on your purchase. I too, made the leap from 300D to 20D and have been in awe with the power of this camera. I did order mine with the kit lens since I sold my 300D to a friend with the kit lens, but to be honest I rarely use it. When I do use it, the 18-55 does its job well, especially for what it cost.
I haven't noticed any bad purple fringing, I did notice a little bit of it on one of my first shots with the 300D, but then the picture was also badly exposed. Overall its a decent lens and should get you by for a while until you get some better glass :)

Higher ISO's are indeed better than the 10D, ...

It has been my estimation that Canon improves its color noise performance by about one stop per camera generation.

Hi,
I made the switch from the 10D to the 20D but even that is a step forward.

I bought the 20D in kit form. However I have done more shooting with my 28-135 USM than the kit lens thus far. The 18-55 EF-s does seem to be a bit of an entry level lens but I guess you get what you pay for. What I find curious is that Canon have decided to put what is obviously a cheap lens with a body which they advertise as semi pro?

I am the same, I have the kit lens, but mainly use my 28-105. I went for the kit lens as a 'get out of jail free card' for tight spots where my 28-105 wouldn't be wide enough, thus far I haven't needed it much, but it has been really handy when I have!

The kit lens was one of the reasons (not the main one - frame rate and buffer) that I went for the 20D over the 10D.

I have noticed a lot for sale on a local auction site though, starting at around $80NZ, so not everyone thinks they are worth keeping!

JAF, I can't wait to see what you produce with that camera!
I've always loved your 10D shots.
When I had the 18-55mm kit with the 300D, it was a decent wide angle lens, but as you mentioned, it does produce quite a bit of colour fringing.
It's probably the worst lens I've used in that respect.

BTW, I too love the shutter sound of the 20D. I have to keep from giggling when I fire of a burst of 5fps. The other day at a hockey game I was using the 20D, and the people beside me gave a few glances. Once I fired off a 5fps burst, both people on each side of me had their eyes bulging out of their heads

I try not to get caught up in things like this, after all its about the images isn't it?

HOWEVER, I know exactly what you mean, that sound, there is something about it, it just makes you want to full the buffer 8)

I had a children's photograher using my 'studio' (really a big room with excellent natural light!), she had a 300D that was on single shooting mode, I pulled out the 20D, flicked it into rapid fire, the results? The kids started posing like the photo shoots they see on TV when they heard that thing go off, got some really funny shots :D
