I shot Barbara Payton & Her Band last night. The lighting was pretty, but also pretty dim most of the time so I was at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/100-125 sec, not quite fast enough to hand hold the 70-200 but I thought I'd "give it a shot" to illustrate what you can expect when you're shooting on the ragged edge.
Couldn't get a custom WB, so I used the Tungsten pre-set.

The 2nd thread:
Barbara Payton & Her Band @ ISO 3200 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=497790)

No noise reduction: Here's what the 20D noise looked like when the lights were a bit brighter.

The rest had some noise reduction applied.

OK, so I liked the mood!

Woof! Man, that's brutal shooting. :-) She a cute little barefoot thing, eh? :-)

that lighting doesn't look all that bad. were you using the IS version of the 70-200 (assuming that's the lens)? i'd have shot @ 1/60 and gained a stop of light.

or just pulled a prime out of the bag. :D

That is pretty good!
Noise is really less of an issue here, I think adjusting some of the levels, contrast and saturation would enhance... I did some quick editing on a couple, hope you don't mind-- and nothing against the stage lights, but sometimes, in still photo, it can be a bit much IMO.

The edits look good!

I love her barefeet!!!

Woof! Man, that's brutal shooting. Well, Dwight, It didn't have to be that bad. I could have taken my 50 f/1.4 Nikkor with me! A lesson learned. Again. :D were you using the IS version of the 70-200 I don't have IS & suspect that it wouldn't help much when a person is moving. or just pulled a prime out of the bag. Yeah, well, see above. ;) I did some quick editing on a couple, I tend to not go that harsh with women, but I agree that the 2nd one looks better. I love her barefeet!!! Flower child! But she ROCKS! :D

Thanks for the comments! I added the link to the other half of the thread in the 1st post.

Nice images. Very nice expression on the last-but one.
I'd do a bit of color noise reduction on the last one I think.

The images miss black (quite so), and while the edits are better, but are maybe a bit on the dark side.

I don't have IS & suspect that it wouldn't help much when a person is moving.

a little motion blur (in the right places) isn't a bad thing, and 1/60th is plenty enough to freeze action when someone's standing around near a mic.

however, w/o IS using that lens at that shutter speed, the camera is more susceptible to camera shake.

The images miss black... If you mean that the blacks should be blacker, I agree. I wanted to show that ISO 3200 doesn't have to look terrible, & I guess I went too far in the "shadow detail" direction.

Again, thanks for the comments.

That's what I meant. :)
