View Full Version : Time to upgrade? (20D) **Edit: "Yes"

I’ve produced pretty decent pictures with my rebel, but I think it is time to upgrade to a 20D. I know I could keep working around my camera’s limitations, but I “want” that 20D probably more than I “need” it. I’m not gonna sell my rebel because I need a second body. I’m shooting weddings as an assistant still, hoping to get some more fashion/glamour opportunities, I was offered to take on nightclub photography on a regular basis (I don’t know if I wanna do this though)… so I could really use the low noise of the 20D and the extra 2MP; of course 5fps, QCD, better viewfinder, better write speeds and a cool black magnesium alloy body is always a plus. It’s just that my knees tend to get kind of weak before I spend $1800 (I can’t buy the camera without the grip, a 2GB card and an extra battery), so I wanna get some opinions (you guys have always helped me spend my money ;))
BTW what the heck is Phase One doing? It’s December! Do we have an update yet?

From a Rebel, the 20D will be a huge leap.........GET IT!!!

If you're shooting weddings, you will eventually find yourself limited by the Rebel. Better noise at higher ISOs, higher resolution, higher frame rate (for the really quick weddings)----you owe it to yourself.

instant startup! AI servo! 5 fps! 40 frame buffer with a fast card! I think you need a 20D

If you are in need of a second body, then by all means go for it.

I'm doing that exact upgrade tomorrow. Going out to Calumet in Bensenville, IL and they already have it saved for me.
I hate this forum.

Ive had my rebel since July and i too "want" a 20D. I know i don't need it as i am still very much in my infancy when it comes to photography but like the others i "Want" it so bad.
I have decided i am going to get one when my Xmas overtime money comes in January. Maybe there will be some reductions in the post xmas sales?
Anyway, can anyone tell me whether my rebel grip, batteries (x3), wireless and wired remotes will work with the 20D or do i need to replace the lot?
Many thanks

I know the grip won't work on the 20D (need BG-E2) but I think the batteries will work. Not sure about the other equiptment.

BTW, what lenses do you have on your arsenal at the moment??

I currently have:
17-40mm L
24-70mm L
70-200 F4 L
50mm F1.8
(plus old kit lens from the Rebel that I never use).
I'm assuming that I can continue to use these lenses on the 20D which is why I'm only buying the 20D body. Can someone verify this?

You sure can and its an enviable collection from someone who is starting out with a 20D and the kit lens. I'd love to have half of em on my box.

Danny boy, I work 5 minutes away from Calumet Bensenville. I go there all the time :P. Yes, you can use any EF lenses and EFs.

Why pay $130 extra in sales taxes? When I can buy it from B&H w/ free shipping and no taxes

Just do it man!
My reasoning for you is that you are semi-pro (yes you are whether you like it or not :D ) so you need equipment to suit your needs.

Not bad.........
except you're missing a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 IS!!!
JOKING!!!
The 17-40 and the 50/85 1.8 should be good enough for wedding shots etc....
OR!!! You can probably purchase a used 10D and a 550 EX......if you don't have one already.
Okay..............I voted for you to purchase the 20D and I stick to my decision.

It's a comfort thing I guess. When I buy big ticket items like this, I want to see it for myself, hold it (if applicable), try it out, and if anything possibly goes wrong with it, I want to take it back to where I bought it and scream at the person that sold it to me. Just my preference I guess.
I guess this is similar to the arguement about buying new equipment vs. used. Some people do one, others do the other, good points made on both sides.

I'm 100% with Danny on this. The difference I paid (here vs. from the US) is a lot more than the $130 quoted. The reasons are the same as danny mentioned above.

i'VE bought a lot from B&H, and have never had issues. If somewhow I get a bad one, I'll return it. and I'm gonna feel good about myself saving some money

cmM,
Just so you know, the battery/batteries you have for your Rebel work in your 20D. Since you are keeping your Rebel as a backup, why not just use those batteries in your 20D? Of course, if you are using both cameras at the same time (2 bodies, mult lenses), you will need additional batteries.

Grip
Sandisk Ultra 1GB (in addition to the cards I already have)
Canon 9900 printer (Ouch!... unexpected purchase)

I've heard from other posts that Walmart carries them but I've never seen them there. I picked one up at Circuit City a long time ago. I forget the brand (Rayovac or Duracell) and it has worked fine for me.
Hope you have a good time w/ your new camera.
Merry Christmas!!!!
