Removing images from UPLOAD folder...???

I could be more confused than I realize but....

I've been uploading images to the input/UPLOAD folder via fetch.
Then adding them to my gallery.
After they have been added to the gallery is it safe to remove them from this directory or must they stay in place?

I would leave that directory as you will need it if you want to upload other pictures.
As for the pictures in the UPLOAD directory they are safe to delete.
