Hi Miles,

There are several reasons to use remote releases.

For macro or long telephoto work, the release prevents vibration from the user touching the shutter release. A tiny vibration can have a big effect in this case.

Often, people want a group shot and if the photog is a member of the group, he/she can trigger the tripod mounted camera with the remote (if cord or range is long enough) while posing for the picture.

Any time you don't want to be behind or touching the camera, the release is used.

Before electronic cameras, the simplest sort were called cable releases; they screwed into the shutter release button and were simple mechanical devices

Today, most digital cameras use either wireless radio frequency (expensive!), wireless infrared or wired electronic releases ranging in price from $50 to hundreds.

Some of the releases have additional functionality build into the release.
with the TC-80N3 you can set bulb length, set to take a picture very N length of time, wait N length of time then take a picture, take multiple pictures.
and some of these can be used in combination with eachother giving you more options.

Steven,

Is that a fat cattle dog with chewed-off ears, or a wolverine on steroids? :) What is that?
