can photos on a dvd be viewed on a television with a dvd machine without the use of a computer. if so, what format should the pictures be in i.e. jpeg: tiff: etc. or is there a special program that a computer will burn the pictures to a dvd to be viewed on a television. thank you.

You have to create a special DVD to view photos on a DVD player.
You cannot just place a data DVD with pictures into a DVD player and see the pictures.
Most software that does DVD burning now have options / software that will create a DVD playable slide show of pictures.
Still have not used the one that came with my DVD burner (an HP) so I can't comment on how easy it is.

Most new DVD players can show JPG images from a DVD data disk - I have a Pioneer which can browse the folder structure, too, and also play discs which have session left open.
So, if you want universally compatible DVD, use some DVD authoring tools, if you want to display an a specific player checking the capabilities of that player might make your life much easier.

Not always true. I have a very simple and very cheap DVD player (Daytek, made in China) which can play almost anything. You can put a data DVD or CD in it with JPEG images on it, and it will play a slideshow - just like Pekka's Pioneer DVD player.

You don't need a special program, just use the DVD burning software that you got with your computer and/or DVD burner (you did get some software to burn DVDs, didn't you?). If your DVD player can show the images just like mine, you just make a data DVD and put the JPEG images on it.

I use Ulead's DVD Pictureshow software to make my DVD slideshows. I like it.

You can make a slide show with music on a CD ROM and play it on your DVD player...
