upload small image in profile (Avatar)

How can I post a small image in my profile? (Avatar)

When I reduce to 6kb as required the image is very poor and yet some I see on the forum seem very good.
Any advice please

You have to pick you image.
Also the fewer different colors the smaller the image can be.
PS has an option that optimizes the color pallet to make the file size smaller.

For more detailed help you could post the original picture you are trying to make your avitar.

If you save your image as a GIF, you can get a reasonable image for your avitar and still be under the 6K limit.

What are you using to save the file?

If you are using photoshop that you can use the save for web option, which lets you preview different qualities giving you the sive and other info.
