View Full Version : My wein optical slave stopped working...

I was just taking some pictures today and experimenting with some lighting. I got off one picture and then the slave stopped working. I am using a Canon 177a attached to a wein hot shoe optical slave.

The flash will fire fine with the test button. If I put the flash in the slave backwards it will fire too but only as the contacts initially connect and then nothing thereafter. If inserted normally, optical slave pointed forward, it just slides in and doesn't fire at all.

As I'm sitting here I guess I'll try recharging the batteries but what gives?

I just tested my 430 on the slave and that works fine.

I have also tried cleaning the contacts and wiggling the flash around in the shoe trying to make sure every connection is there to no avail.

I threw in a new set of batteries and it worked just fine.

I guess I solved my own problem. Hoepfully someone experiencing the same thing might see this someday though. :)

Did you try more than one cycle with the 430EX? Typically that is the extent of the cooperation with a 430EX and most optical slaves, one time then flash unit lockup.

Enjoy! Lon

No, I didn't try more than one recycle. I was just trying to see if it would fire in the first place the the 177a wouldn't fire at all.

Thanks for the info about the 430 though, I'll keep that in mind.
