Well I'm looking for a telephoto for my G9. I find myself outside taking pictures and always wanting to be able to zoom a little farther. I know the Canon is 2x and the Raynox is 2.2x. Those are close enough for me so I'm wondering which one has better IQ. The Raynox is also about $80 more and I'm wondering if it is really worth it. Any suggestions?

www.lensmateonline.com has telephoto samples from both lenses that you are looking at. IMHO, the Canon lens has the edge on image quality and that is the lense that I selected to purchase. I just returned from DC a couple of weeks ago and used this lens extensively at the National Zoo, my best capture was of this Cheetah taken using the full 2X extra reach with the Canon Teleconverter:

Hi Dianne...Very nice shot of the cat! Were you using a mono-pod, or tripod for the shot, or were you able to hand hold it? Just curious!

Thanks Mike, no this shot was handheld, had to boost the ISO to 400 to get the shutter speed high enough. The lens does add a bit of weight to the camera, but if you need the extra reach well worth it.

Thanks, Dianne! I bought the lens awhile back, but really haven't had time to play with it yet. My first attempt was on an eagle, but it was a very overcast day, and I only got off a couple shots before it took off. I shook it so badly the IS didn't have a prayer! The only other time I've had it on I was sitting, and used my knees for a rest, and that seemed to work well. It appears, judging from your picture, that if the sun ever shines here again, hand holding is a viable option. Thanks again!

Well I ordered the Canon. The IQ on the Canon is very nice and the little bit of extra range on the Raynox isn't worth $90. I'll have it tuesday.

I don't have a G9 but a S3-IS---I got a raynox 2020 back in april for my birthday---I find the images are not very clear--I hope the Canon Lense works well for you....I have seriously considered getting the canon tc too for comparison. Dont ge me wrong--I have taken some good shots, things I probably only wished to capture before--the definition is just not where I whould like it to be.

Well I received my TC-DC58C yesterday and I'm very happy with the results. The IQ is great and the extra reach it gives is just what I needed. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I wish I could get a lens hood for it. Sometimes the sun hits its just the wrong way.

After the great results with this, I'm tempted to pick up the canon wide angle.

Does image stabilization on the G9 work with the teleconverter?

What's the filter size on it?

Thx,

Sabesh

It seems to work. However, you do need a faster shutter speed since any little movement shows up as alot with the 2x on. I'm not sure of the filter size because it's not threaded at the end. I wish I could get a hood for it. You'll get some flare with it.

I just got my TC-DC58C lens and Canon adapter this week. I had been using the Safety Zoom feature to extend my zoom reach, but downgrading to 2MP quality to achieve 15x zoom was not quite what I wanted. The 6x optical + 2x tele-converter lens gives me the full 12MP image, plus great clarity/detail.

You do need to bump up your shutter speed with long zooms to compensate for any motion, because IS won't cover all your movement. Here's a shot I took yesterday through a double-pane window (to avoid scaring off the squirrel). I leaned against the window frame to help stabilize too, and used 1/250 shutter speed. It equal to 12x zoom.

Here's a crop of the squirrel. Pretty good detail on the fur, etc.

Here's a shot from a few days ago using Safety Zoom, 2MP, 15x zoom.

and here's a crop of the above image;

I can see better details in the first images above using the tele-converter lens, so I'm glad I got the lens. However, it requires more work, and some form of travel bag to carry it around. I decided to use an older fanny pack for the lens, and a small bag on my belt for the G9. That combo worked fine for a lengthy hike we took the other day, so I'm happy with this setup. It's pretty easy to take out the lens and attach it when I want, and then remove it when I don't need it.

When it comes to wideangle, I can recommend Raynox HD 7000 Pro. I think I get better (wider and sharper) results with Raynox.
What I can say is use the original canon converter. You will have vignetting and full zoom problems with fotodiox adapters.

not sure if this is true or not ...with Canon's teleconverter, is jpg all you can shoot?
no raw? (if so, why is that?)

are there other equal 2x teleconverters?

Someone told you garbage...;)
Using an optical or digital teleconverter has nothing to do with the picture format (JPG, RAW), every combination is possible.
Perhaps he meant digital zoom, which is magnifying/cropping in camera. As RAW ist raw and all processing is done in PP, there's no digital zoom with RAW.
