I'm going to be running around eastern europe for a month or so and am wondering about portable hard drives... This might be stupid, but can my Ipod be used as one? Are there ones that I can just plug my camera into and transfer everything over? I will be using a friends apartment over there as sort of a "home base" He has a laptop and everything, so if I need a computer to transfer everything, I can do that on occasion. But do they make self contained ones that don't need a computer??? I am trying to keep things as light as possible. So if anyone knows any other options, let me know!
I shoot RAW mode, if that matters.
I know similar questions have been asked, but I am technologically impaired and sometimes need things spelled out for me!

yes u can use an ipod. just store it as drag and drop. The only other thing can recommend is one of those 2.5" hard drives.

Are you by any chance a Costco Member or maybe know someone who is?
They often have good deals on Western Digital "Passport" HDs that would be perfect to take along. I have their 250Gb model and it fits in a shirt pocket.

There are many options in various price levels.
Epson, Canon and other have dedicated photobanks in various sizes. I just bought a HyperDrive and have written a mini review here. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=498183)

Both of those links kick back 404 errors.

As stated canon, epson etc make personal storage devices that you can back up your photos without the need for a pc and some you can view the pictures on and some you cant. However they are not cheap for what they do and the capacity. Its a lot cheaper to buy a portable hard dirve and if you have access to a pc along your way just make sure you have enough memory between stops.

cocheese,
Since you admit your technology handicap maybe it would be helpful to explain that there are two different kinds of external hard drives.
One kind is usually referred to as an external drive. It is a standard desktop hard drive in an external case that plugs into the computer with a USB cable. On more expensive models you can also connect to the PC with firewire or eSATA cables in addition to USB. These models also need external power and have to be plugged into a power outlet in addition to being connected to the computer. Western Digital has a line of these kind of drives called myBook.
The second kind of external has a notebook hard drive and it doesn't require an external power source. The USB cable that connects it to the PC also supplies power. The upside to this kind of drive is the lighter weight and smaller size. The downside is that notebook drives are generally 5400 rpm and transfer data slower. The Western Digital Passport drive that Flying Fotog mentions above is this kind of drive.
From your description, since you'll have access to a PC and you want a cheap and lightweight solution, the Passport type drive sounds like what you need. The battery powered units that don't require a PC are small and light but also much more expensive than an external drive that plugs into a PC.

Ive personally upload pics (Jpeg) to my Ipod, and it slows it down alot, Then agian my Ipod is the classic 80gig, and has been Dropped more times then i care to let apple now. I also wouldnt NOT rely on it for a permanint store hard drive for my pics.

I would recommend a PSD (Personal Storage Device) such as a hyperdrive Colorspace or Colorspace O at hyperdrive.com. They are fairly inexpensive and have several options. They are probably the fastest available for downloading files from a storage card. They are very reliable and very convenient to use. There are other popular PSDs available, but I believe these are probably the best bang for the buck. I have had several versions of hyperdrive PSDs and never had an equipment related failure.

Those colorspace things are really nice, but expensive! You have the option of just buying the top part and supplying the Hard drive yourself??
I could probably do without the color screen thing... But that is exactly what I'm looking for. I would like something self contained like that, where I can just plug in my CF card and it stores that data for me.

Yes, you can save a little by getting the shell and populating the hyperdrive with a HD of your choice. In comparison to other popular PSDs such as an Epson the hyperdrives are a bargain.

ipods blow for this application, and if i remember correctly, they convert raw to jpg.
i bought a digital foci 40gb "photo safe" from adorama, it worked pretty well on a destination wedding.

Yes I agree. I just bought one and I had a spare HD to put in so I just got the casing. I really like that I can replace the HD at any time with a larger. Though I don't think I will need more than the 160 GB I have in it.

I have the WD and its great. I actually just opened up the case and put a bigger drive inside it. Very small and no charger needed. power right from the computer.

I got a Hyperdrive Colorspace and it works great. You can put your own HD in or opt to purchase it with it if you're not to comfortable with doing it yourself (it's really simple though. . .). There's the new Colorspace 0 which has a larger screen if you need. The unit is fast and if you want to get a larger HD in the future, you can. I shoot everything in RAW and have no problems with the unit or viewing the photos.
Check it out at: http://www.hyperdrive.com/
