Good morning. My 14 year old nephew is looking to get into digital photography and my sister wants to get him a digital camera for Christmas. The budget they are looking at is around the $300 range. Can anyone recommend a good camera in that price range?

I don't think he will be printing much larger than 5x7 very often so a 3 MP would probably work. The only experience I have with a P&S camera was a Fuji FinePix S602z and I thought it was great, but the newer version of that camera is out of the price range.

It would also be nice for the camera to allow full manual control so he can learn to do more than just push a button.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

this topic would probably do better in the small compact or G series camera subforums since the folks there deal with them on a more regular basis

however, for that range, I'd say something in the A series would work out nicely- A75 or so? If you can find a used G3 for that, it's also a really nice camera

Try the Canon A70/A75 or whatever the A70 series is on. I believe the A75 is the replacement to the A70. My brother has an A70 and really likes it. I got a chance to check it out and I felt like a clutz with it...I'm used to having a 24-70mm F2.8L on a 10D or the 120-300mm F2.8 on it so you get the picture. I think that would be great for a first camera and a 256 ought to be good.

Im not sure if the A85 is in your price range where you live, but, as a new dig camera owner, I think its a great camera.. point and click, and part/full manual modes.

Actually, pushing a button is quite enough if he can find good subjects and record something significant in life. Learning how to operate a camera is secondary to developing an eye, in my opinion.

Anyway, I use my A70 on full manual. The meter reading gives over an under exposure in stops so you can use it like a match needle system.
