My nice new 100-400L series will be arriving next week, just wondering which make of UV filter is best.

Is it worth paying extra for say a Hoya 77mm Pro 1 Pro1 Super HMC Multi-coated UV filter, rather than just a standard 77mm Hoya HMC Multi-Coated UV Filter?

I'd put the super multi coated on that one.

I have the usual hoya and sometimes with it, my sigma 70-200 does not autofocus properly.

Is that because the standard Hoya is 'linear'?
Are the 'Pro' versions circular?
What is the difference between a linear and a circular polarizer?

Can anyone recommend a good one?

"Linear" and "Circular" are polarizer filters; A UV is just straight glass. What Doc F foundwas that the cheaper, uncoated Hoya wasn't optically flat, which screwed up his focus (by acting like a funhouse lens).

I use the Pro 1 on my 100-400L. I tried some others but found this one best for reduced flare. I tested the lens with and without the filter and could not fault it. I cannot say the same for some other manufacturers.
I can recommend this filter.

Why not Canon. I'm sure they would not put out a filter that would affect their lenses performance.

As sombody mentioned yesterday, Canon filters are made by hoya (I'm just reporting what that person said).

I thought it was Tiffen.
No matter the point is still valid.
