Hi All

I know I can store pics to CD..but why can't I store my data to DVD's...much more space?

I use DVDs for my backups (along with multiple hard drives).

Think of DVD as a 'faster CD'...the DVD spins faster so the laser must be able to write in spite of the greater speed. So the dyes of DVD-R/RW are inherently less stable than the dyes of CD-R/RW. An analysis of the technology of DVD indicates that the DVD-RW is the least permanent; next better is the DVD-R; the DVD+R is the most permanent.

If the purpose of DVD is 'backup', that is a fine use. If the purposes of the DVD is 'archive', that is a shakey use of optical storage. Better use is magnetics for archiving. I have commercially produced copy of Photoshop LE on DVD which cannot be read now, even though I could read it fine a few years ago...so just how permanent is DVD?!?!?!

The way most people back up its not a good medium for backup either.

Go for an external hard-drive sync'd to your "Pictures" folder or wherever you keep your images. More upfront $$, but SO worth it in terms of convenience.

Anyone know if DVD RAM is more secure for archiving purposes?

Well, you do see description of DVD RAM as 'archival' purpose, whereas DVD+RW and -RW are more temporary in the recording persistence associated with the technology (less permanence than -R and +R)
