40d Battery grip

anyone have experience with the cheaper ebay grips or is it bad to buy a non-canon one?

Depends on your needs. There are many fans of the Opteka grips and such here at POTN. My experience of a non-canon grip was an Opteka for my XTi, when I had it. While the grip was ok it just didn't hold up and came apart after 4 or so months of shooting. Further the shutter button was not as responsive as the Canon. Now I shoot a lot in portrait mode so perhaps that is why the Opteka did not hold up. Depending on your needs the off brand may be just fine.
