there's one good thing about this pic, the composition...the HDR is overdone producing really bad halos around the wharf and the sky. Also the purpose of HDR is to capture a full tonal range and detail in an image, there is little or no detail in the shadow areas. This image looks like one exposure that has been tonemapped. I think an unaltered pic would look much better representing this scene.

This one doesn't work for me. You way overdid the HDR. I would go back and try some more natural settings. I'd also try the color version.

Composition is definitely excellent. The halos towards the center adds a dramatic, ominous flair -great job.
