i have an old sony t3 compact and had an eos 35 mm years ago. canon A1 prior to that.
my brother has just bought a 40D and it is quite a beast. however, despite loss in quality i want something i can just about put in a pocket.
i am in the market, certainly by September, for a new compact camera.
i know a compact will never compete with a DSLR.
i could get a G9, (noise over ISO200, green "auto" on dial rubs off - according to some places on the web, dust attracted to inside - Youtube) or i could wait to see if there is a G10 around the immediate corner.
if, and i know there is no news yet, the G10 has a CMOS sensor as opposed to CCD does it mean it would be better just because it was larger. i know there are advances in CMOS manufacture but if inherently a CMOS has lower image quality and more noise than a CCD then do i lose anything in picture quality by using a 1/1.7 G9 CCD as opposed to potentially a new G10 with larger CMOS but more noise?
are we going to get to the stage where the manufacturers are going to think "sod the quality of the tools, we can process the mess out"

If the G10 is going to be roughly the same size as the other G-Series cameras, it will have the same size sensor regardless of whether its a CMOS or CCD (I'm talking physical size, not megapixels). Bigger sensors require bigger lenses, which require bigger cameras to hold them. It seems to me that Canon is only reluctantly making G-Series cameras anyway, so don't look for too much in the next model (if there is a next model).

Not exactly a product release announcement, but Canon included mention of S and G series cameras for this fall, see

I've got a 40D and the G9, and both are great cameras, with different capabilities. As a compact camera (although not as compact as some obviously) the G9 does a brilliant job - yes it starts to get noisy above ISO 200, but how often will you be over that? I've only gone over ISO 100 for testing so far. If you plan to do a lot of low light photography where a high ISO might be needed, then you might be best thinking about the 400/450D which is smaller/lighter than the 40D.
I don't know about bits rubbing off, or dust - probably haven't had it long enough yet!
I expect that if there is a G10 and it did have a CMOS sensor, then the price will almost certainly be a lot higher - just look at the Sigma DP-1, so you need to consider that as well.
Certainly I would expect you to see a massive difference in image quality between your Sony and the G9. I say this because I have an older Canon IXUS 400 and the difference between that and the G9 is very noticeable. Add to that the versatility of settings within the G9, RAW etc. and for me anyway it makes it the next best thing to a DSLR - although I realise not everyone will agree with this.
