Have a chance to purchase a 400 5.6 L at a very good price. Would like advise from someone that has tried this lens. Will be using it on a 10D.

I got the 400 5.6 last summer. It's a great lens. It focuses very fast. It is light enough to hand hold. Unfortuantely, mine is back to Canon for the second time for slime on the back of the front lens element.

Scott, what is this slime that you refer to? Is it slime mold, mildew or some lubricant that is on the inside front element?
With all the QC posts regarding Canon cameras and lenses it makes me wonder if buying a new lens is a real gamble.

Buy it, do not think about it. As they say "Just do it'
I've had mine for a while now and it is very sharp and has very fast AF. I stick a 1.4 TC behind it and it is still very very sharp.

Yep, excellent lens.
Here's a review I wrote comparing it to the 100-400. Though you might not be comparing, it does describe the 400 Prime quite a bit.

PaulI don't know what it is. I sent it back to Canon the first time and they cleaned some of it off. I called them and they sent a FedEx label to do it again. I'm waiting to get it back. It's the only Canon lens that I've had this problem with.

Thanks for your followup Scott.
My friend just got his 400 f/5.6 and sent me a sample picture from his 20D and using the 1.4x converter. I'm convinced and so I've ordered one this AM from B&H.

Besides, I have never, ever talked someone into buying a lens. I have only tried to talk them out of buying the *wrong* lens.

I'd rather get a 300 F/4 with a 1.4 TC.
That way if needed you have a faster lens and with the 1.4 you can still keep AF and you GET IS!!!
If you stick a 1.4 or 2x on a 400 F/5.6 you lose AF abilities if you have 20D or 10D, or 300D

I love mine! As mentioned previously, it's hand holdable, fast focusing and very sharp. Not the fastest lens around, but it has worked well with my 20D at higher iso speeds. The built-in hood is really cool, and the tripod collar works well.
