I just got a Stofen Omni Bounce unit for my flash, so that my flash might be less harsh for next weeks wedding. My 20D has ETTL 2 and works very well in auto mode. Now I am sure there is going to be some loss of flash output, how much should I compensate to make up the difference? I am using a Canon 420EX Speedlight, so it is an auto only unit, however, I do have flash compensation on my camera...Dean

Most of those things will decrease the light by 1 to 1.5 stops. However, I assume that you are shooting in some normal ETTL mode. In that case, the flash still does a preflash pop, and that light will be metered the same way in the camera right before the main flash pop. So, theoretically, you should not have to compensate or do any tricks. The metering should simply assume that there is less light reflecting off the subject. I did say _theoretically_.

If you point it down the Camera will take having less light and adjust but straight up it losses light and you have to adjust.
The effect will change in large rooms so do a test you might have to use a +1 ev.

This relects my experience with the Omnibounce, the images all come out correctly exposed, however I loose quite a bit of distance, and the flash uses a lot more power, so I have longer recharge times and the batteries don't last anywhere as long.

I guess this means we don't get something for nothing.

Here is my first test with it. I am very pleased, I shot this straight on and not bounced...Dean

great shot, that omni bounce looks like it works great for doing straight-on shots, which is what I've hoped.
I'm getting a Sigma EF-500 DG Super Flash for Christmas for my 20D that has a Sto-fen omni bounce and I had been wondering how it'd do. This gives me great hope for a few photo shoots I have planned with that flash.
