Excellent images. I'm jealous! Second one shows 1/80th sec and is still very sharp. My only nitpick is that the backgrounds are a bit distracting but hey, I wish I was there!!
Love your site, nice portfolio.

Most folks don't realize that when you are shooting air to air, there is almost no relative motion.
With two good pilots and smooth air, you're essentially shooting a non- moving target and as such, you can use your normal everyday hand-held shutter speeds.

They are looking where they're going. In any formation flying you have a lead airplane in this case the photo plane and then the subject plane. In the photo below I pulled up right next to a 182, and I keep looking at him until I break away from the formation.

Fantastic photos of two of my favourite wartime aircraft. I'm amazed that these planes are still flying. I mean it's not like you can just go down to the local K Mart Auto and get parts for an Allison engine.

I am so impressed!! I love the F4U so much, along with all Navy planes in general. My Grandfather used to fly those off a carrier (along with the Wildcat and Hellcat) in the South Pacific during WWII, so I've always hungered for pics of them. First time in this forum, and was pleasantly surprised to see such recent and wonderful shots. Thank you!!

It was anything but smooth up there, we were just under the clouds because of the low ceiling and we got bounced around pretty good. I woke up this moorning with a sour shoulder, hand and elbow also a bruise under my eyebrow from my camera smacked me, ouch, 1D's are heavy… LOL. Not complaining though, loved every second of it! The pilots are one of the key factors to a successful shoot. John Hinton piloted the P-40; the F4U by Chris Fahey and piloting the photo ship (Beech Barron) was Steve Hinton Jr.

As I suspected... I have 3,300 C-130 hours and have taken a few air to air shots (all film). The vintage treatment is awesome. You just make it look too easy.;)

Okay. Now maybe I'm expecting TOO much, but my father piloted B-24 Liberator's during the war and they're pretty close to my heart. There are very few examples left in the world and only ONE here in Australia (and it's only partially restored).
You don't have any shots of those do you?? A tall order I know.

Not really the Collings foundation has one that visits all across the US. It will be here in about a week. If no others pop up ( I'd be surprised if it didn't) I will search my files tomorrow or go and shoot one for you. Also I KNOW that you can find it on www.fencecheck.com
To see it go to www.collingsfoundation.com

To see it go to www.collingsfoundation.com (http://www.collingsfoundation.com)Thanks for the links. I'll pass them on to the restoration foundation here in Australia. I believe they are after four engine cowlings and three DC-3 motors to help complete the aircraft.
Photo of B-24 Thanks so much for showing us the photo Jay. It's the first "modern" photo of one I've seen. I have only photos of my Dad's aircraft taken while they were on recon. They are badly deteriorated. Wish Dad was still around to see this one.

The nice thing about the Collings Foundation is that they tour the country throughout the year. Somewhere north of three hundred days a year so just about every other year, they come to an airport that's relatively nearby.

If you really want to come on over!! We do have some awesome A/C here as well. But I have some neat stuff from your side of the pond as well.
The Connie comes to mind first. I really want to come and see some of the old Brit stuff you guys have as well.
Thanks for the Witchcraft shot Jay!! The B-24 is not my fav bird, but it is the only one flying oh well. I am a big B-25 fan. This is "Executive Suites" it is green now. I hope to get an A/A shoot with it this year!!

The B-24 is not my fav bird, but it is the only one flying oh well. Nor was it my Father's favourite. He often referred to it as a flying bass drum (from the loud drumming sound that reverberated through the fuselage while in flight) and also the flying coffin because it was hard to get in and out of. Nevertheless...that's what he flew. His favourite was the Tiger Moth that he initially trained on.

The Mitchell is another of my favourites. It's a cool looking aircraft and I can't believe anyone could launch one from a carrier! I always felt that it was North American's attempt to copy Douglas's Boston Bomber (I believe it was the DB-7 in the US) Don't know which one is the better AC, but the Boston served with the RAAF and recently they found one in New Guinea and I believe it's fully restored. I happened to see its beautiful Wright Cyclones when they were on display...my favourite engines too!
Hmmm...I must post some images I took at the Toowoomba air show last week-end.
