Be gentle Im New.....
Ive finally decided to join the digital era and moth ball my old EOS 5.
Im looking at buying the 40D or 450D and wanted a little advice please.
my prefferred bent is Sports and I already have 3 or 4 EF lenses to work with but Id like something with good allround capability.
With the research Ive done the 450 is running 12+ mp and the 40 is 10+
, will I notice much difference in picture quality ? obviously better fps in the 40 but Im open to suggestions.
appreciate your thoughts.

The 40D is a much better camera along many, many dimensions. If you can afford it, go for it.

If you are going to shoot sports you will need 2 things. 1) Speed (both fps and AF) 2) Durability. That says 1 Series. Look for a good used 1D MkII or 1D MkIIN. The last thing you need to worry about is MP. I know sports shooters that are still using a 4 MP 1D so the 8MP 1D MkII series will be plenty. Remember it is a misconception that a 12 MP camera is 50% bigger than an 8 MP camera. With an image size of 4272 x 2848 the 12 MP camera is only about 20% bigger than the 8 3504 x 2336. Plus the 1 Series has a bigger sensor than either the 40D or the 450D.

I agree with Dennis, especially since you want to shoot sports. The 40D will be a better buy and is worth the extra $$.

You could probably pick up a left over 30D or even a used 30D as well. Mine is treating me very well. Very happy with is. Can get 30D bodies for about $600-$700 now.

Between 40d and Xsi, I will take 40d for sports.

I would go with 40D or 30D. 5D not really a sports comera....do not get the advantage of the added crop telephoto, focus much better on the 40D. Frames / second also not fast enough on 5D if you are shooting sequences. IMO
