Hi everyone,
first post :o . Ive been working my way through canon cameras trying to find one that supports remote capture with tools such as gphoto2 (http://www.gphoto.org/)etc using the libptp (http://libptp.sourceforge.net/)and the ptp protocol in linux (actually any is ok just want something to work). Ive been trying out cameras and i havent found any so far that actually work.
Most of the supported lists on the sites for the gphoto2 (http://www.gphoto.org/)and capture (http://capture.sourceforge.net/)packages arn't really maintained. so the cameras listed as working are impossible to buy anymore.
I was hoping that some of you might know of currently stocked cameras that support remote capture.
i'll try and update the lists if anyone has found success.
cheers
matt

Have you used gPhoto2? If so, how does it compare with PSRemote and Canon's own remote capture software?

Pro Series? Is that S3 IS and S5 IS? So my S5 IS will work with a remote? :)

No, the Pro series are (were) a separate line of PowerShots, the Pro90IS and Pro1 (and Pro70; not listed here). The S5 does support Remote Capture; if you look in the "S-series", you'll see it listed.

The Canon remote software is under Canon Utilities / Camera Window. All you need is your USB cable. The commercial software PSRemote adds features.

Gotcha. See it. Don't know how i missed it...so where do i get a remote for my S5 IS?This is remote control, via a computer, not a remote (cable) release. With it, you can shoot while tethered to your computer; the display is rlayed to the computer screen and you can adjust settings, etc. from the computer; the files can also be saved on the computer directly.

The CHDK hack allows you to use a (home made, at the moment) USB-based remote control trigger cable; IIRC the S5 version supports this functionality.
