For those who shoot airshows with a 400mm or larger.. I assume most dont handhold as these lenses are heavy. Do you use a monopod? Do you put a head on it? or just put the lens on the monopod and tilt as needed?

Most of my friends who use 400m + primes DO hand hold the lens. A few use one for statics interestingly, but they find that it just gets in the way when the planes are going up/down compared to things like cars where they stay relatively level.

I do handhold all of my telephotos.

100-400 handhold , 500 handhold , my body is a much better moving pod than any tripod or monopod. Just my expierences .

100-400 handheld or Bush hawk 320. Agree with the rest, tripod or mono just seem to get in the way, and you'll be lucky to get enough space as well :-)

Yup! Wonderful!

He's passed the insanity on to his son, condemning him, too, to a lifetime of heavy camera bags and empty wallets.

I handhold my 100-400mmL. You get used to it. Note the tripod mount is facing upward. It can also be removed.

I've also hand held the 500mm f/4 with 2x & a 1DMKIIn. It's possible but it sure makes for a long day.

Gotta jump in and say what a great picture. Now don't tell me the kid was just holding the 2nd body for the picture...and I, too, handhold my 400 and 200-500 for air shows and birds in flight, etc. You just have to remember to put your arms down now and then.
