Hi all !
Just wanted to let you know that the Tokina 17mm ATX PRO lens is on its way to me from Adorama (actually it will be tomorrow, as they process their weekend orders on Monday). I can't wait ...

I blame Drisley for this - it's all his fault ! :-x

I have read very favorable reviews of this lens. It seems to be a fine superwide prime. Good luck with the lens.

I've had the Tokina for over a year. It is my favorite lens. I have some money burning a hole in my pocket and I still can't find a way to replace the tokina. I've been kicking around the idea of the Canon 16-35 L, but I think the Tokina is sharper than that lens. Last week, I bought a Singh-Ray ND filter and Cokin holder for my Tokina. I'm taking the combo to Death Valley for some wide angle madness.

Here are a couple Tokina pics to hold you over while you wait for the UPS truck.

Took this one a couple days ago.

Here's one I took near Phoenix, AZ last february. I don't think I posted this one on the forum before.

Post some Pics once your lens arrives! I'd like to see what other people can get out of this great lens.

RbnDave - these are some outstanding pictures ! It's good to see the full-size examples - I only noticed very small, almost unnoticeable, traces of CA on the cactii picture.

photopig - $180 is VERY low price for such a lens, in fact it's hard to believe that somebody will sell is for such a price. Maybe you saw the older version, which is not so good optically (so I've read) ?

It was the ATX Pro.....he stated it was 3 years old. Bidding started at $150...stated that the lens was a 9, had minute dust on lens........whatever that meant (under the lens......dunno).

In either case I wouldve taken it if I wasnt an idiot and gourged myself on turkey ......yawwwwn

Olegis,

The CA you see might come from the lens or it could be a product of me oversharpening or it could be both. The Siphon Draw photo was processed back in the day when I thought every photo looked best with two or three applications of USM. I've learned to be a bit more carefull with USM, but I still have tons of oversharpened pics in my galleries.

Here's a pic that should have a lot of CA and flare, but I think the tokina did a good job.

Photopig,

I'll have mercy and not post any of my favorite 17mm shots. It'll be difficult for me. Whenever someone mkes a post about the Tokina 17mm I always have to break out some examples. Next weekend I should have some new shots of the Mojave dessert to share.

I've had the Tokina 24/200 ATX for six months - outshines my Canon 28/135.

Tokina manufactures glass for most of the major camera companies. Their parent company Hoya has been in operation for 75+ years.

I love this lens as everybody knows.
I finally got a chance to take some indoor "people" pictures with this lens this weekend.
I will post links a little later.

BTW, this is my first visit back to the new and improved forum. I really like the new features! Thanks Pekka.

Ok, I "developed" my first people photos with the Tokina 17ATX Pro.
Wow is all I have to say! The detail and sharpness is above my expectations!

Here are a few of my favourites:

Hehe, thanks Rj. You know the real reason I keep posting pictures from this lens?
Because I bragged so much about it and it now looks like a few people are buying it.
I just want to show proof that the lens performs in case somebody gets a bad copy and blames me for wasting their money hehe
(btw, where are the smiley faces now)?

We will blame you anyway :)

Great pictures, Drisley ! The BW photo of the kid and the one of the cat are just fabulous - wide-angle lenses can be very funny to use because of the way they distort the perspective, I noticed it more than once, especially on children pictures.

My order status update : as of yesterday, 12/10/2004 At 14:54 - the Pick ticket was printed (whatever that means). Come on, UPS - get there and bring me my lens !

Aghh! (where are the face icons?)!
I never knew what all the fuss was about with wide angle until I tried it. It truly is fun, for the exact reasons you state. The min focus distance is so close that for that 50% enlargement above, the kid's nose was practically inside the lens hood :)
Pictures of people (and cats) really seem to show the lens' ability to resolve detail, much more so than in the landscape and "architecture" pictures I was taking.
I can't wait until you get your lens too!
Btw, the word "pick" can mean intercept (in sports), so I think "the Pick ticket was printed" means that RoanJohn called UPS and had the lens re-routed to his place :)

Well, if it's true - I have to order another one ? This time I won't speak about it with anyone, untill the lens gets here ...

(No smilies - no good !)

Just got a call from UPS - the package is supposed to arrive on Friday ! Too bad they charge $21 to release it from customs ... :-(
