You want to scan your hard drive for bad sectors and then shoot RAW ???

no sir, i wish to be able to install the hack that enables the digic II processor in my canon s2is camera to be able to take RAW format photographs. I know there is a way to do it im just not sure exactly what do to on my s2is to be able to check the firmware.

the only way i was able to retrieve any kind of info on my camera was to connect to my pc via usb cable and right click it under my computer then select properties to see the firmware. im not sure how to check via the display on the camera itself? any clues? is there a way to see the firmware on the camera itself? maybe turning it on and holding down some buttons in some order to show the firmware? or perhaps in some menu selection somewhere?

any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.

P-S, the program itself that enables the RAW format is called CHDK, more info here http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

I did it!!!!!! Boy it's neat to know that my lil ole 5MP Canon S2IS now shoots RAW format!!!

funny thing is there are also a couple games i can play on it now and a nifty calendar as well as a host of other options, and one of the best is the battery life indicator now present, definately gonna come in handy.

i also set the camera to automatically go into shooting RAW format as soon as i start the camera, its really an awesome feature!!

if anyone here has questions regarding how to do this on your S2 or S3 (not sure if the S5 shoots in RAW) or the S5 if it does not shoot in RAW, please post here and i will walk you through it, PM me as well is another option.

my main reasoning for shooting in RAW is the incredible amount of control i know have over the pictures, being able to adjust them every which way in PhotoShop CS3, as well as the myriad of minute incremental adjustments available in LightRoom (latest version update!!) for complete and total control :) !!!

Glad you made the plunge - I use the SDM version of CHDK in a pair of A570is cameras that I'm using to take stereo image pairs. It's amazing how much more a Canon camera can do than it could when I pulled it out of the box.

I know!!! Jim, i get a massive kick out of the Live View too!! I went into the menu options and now whenever i depress the shutter button halfway down i get a running Live View! simpy flagergasting that this little camera can do all that!

i have the s2 also and am thinking of doing the hack to, but will this in anyway harm the circuitry of the camera, i noticed u can get 1/10000 shutter speed also.

No, it won't. It's an additional program that only lives in memory. "Rebooting" the camera will get rid of it.

Not at all. It is a software which does not change the original firmware. Erase the hack from card and you are left only with the original.

dont worry at all, it wont affect the camera at all, the program merely resides in the SD card, i erased then the program then rebooted the camera and its fine, so i wne t back to the program as i love the RAW function.

ok i've got the chdk on my sd card but i don't know if it's in root or not. In My Computer it shows as sd card "f" . so i put it on the card and in the camera, turn it on in playback mode. In the menu the UPDATE FIRMWARE is there so i select that. Then it just sits there and does nothing??

I have the 570 model, when I turn it on a blue light flashes. I believe that it is the print button.

If you look at the files in yur removable drive, there should also be a "disk boot" and "ps.fir file"

hey there, did u install the correct file for your version of s2? i had to first open ms word or wordpad and make a file called

ver.req

and save that file as "all files" then move it to my sd card to be sure i had downloaded the right version. then i merely turned on my camera by turning the on switch to the RIGHT, not left, then pressing MENU and going in there and look around to file called FIRM, select that then update it, then after that the camera reboots and youll see s little blue splash screen, then you press the shirtcut button, mine is the timer button as i had set it up as that and then you will see a little blue display across the bottom and then you can acress the raw types by pressing menu from there.

ok real simple, ROOT diectory of your SD card is simple to get to:

if for example your pc reads the card as drive "f" then all you do is double click "f" drive and when that opens, just place the files there, NOT in a folder, just drag them there. after that, place the card back in to your camera, update the firmware and your camera will reboot and you'll see a spashscreen in blue pop up, then just merely press whatever shortcut button you have set up, and youll see a new little bar in blue across the bottom left that says "default script <ALT>" all that will be in blue, from there just press the menu button and setup the options u want. after you have adjusted the options u want, just press menu again to leave the options screen and press the shortcut button again to exit the new format menu. by the way, if you want to set it up to automatically come on taking pictures in RAW format, be sure to set that up under "Debug Parameters" and select the last option "Make card bootable" it will seem like nothingn happens, but it works, everytime you turn your caemra on it will auto save in RAW
