I just ordered the 1D3 and will be using it mostly with my 70-200 2.8 IS and my 400 prime will my 488 head and tripod in my signature be enough for this combo or do I need to look at something a bit more rigid?

I sure hate to have the head fail and dump over 5 grand to the ground so any help is appreciated.

get Gitzo 3-series or 5-series with Markins or RRS ballheads and plates, and if you want something cheaper then get 055XProB tripod with 488RC2, but i am sure your tripod combo is fine but i always try to be in safe side so i get the best i can afford for my expensive gear heavy [i spend more on tripods better than spend on lenses and bodies if they dropped because of bad or not sturdy enough tripods and heads].

Thanks guys.

The 055xprob tripod is the replacement to my 3021BPRO i think only difference is the 055 has 2 padded legs to my 1.

I was actually looking at a Markins M10L and a Gitzo 1257 but if what I have is enough I'll just hold off for a bit as at some point I am going to purchase the Gitzo GT3530LSV and a Wimberly II head in preperation for a 500 f/4.0 IS

I was going to recommend 3-series or 5 as i am sure many here will upgrade to heavier lenses, but i didn't realize that you or others thinking to get any heavier gear so soon so that i don't try to recommend any more expensive tripods [but i did already].

I don't mind any recommendation and thanks for your input. As for a purchasing the 500 that won't happen anytime soon, not unless I win a lottery or 5800.00 mysteriously shows up in my bank account ;). I know eventually what I'll own but it has to come 1 piece at a time like alot of the folks here. The tripod and head alone is over 1200.00 that I want and will need when I do get the 500L. So if I can make do safely with what I have it just helps me out a bit further $ wise for future upgrades. On the other hand if my tripod setup is not or will not be adequate for the new body upgrade and my 2 heaviest lenses the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 400 5.6 I need to do something now and be ready when my 1D3 arrives.

I use my 30D and 70-200 f/2.8 and 100-400 on a 488. No worries and I can't image that the 1D is that much heavier. I think you can "make do" until you get that Wimberley head and carbon fiber tripod.

I know that money is always an issue, and now i am saving for ballheads and still thinking alot which heads should i get [one time], not talking about Wimberley II as it is must head for longer lenses later, but i can't spend one one ballhead then later i feel i need another one or some will recommend better one than what i've got.

I agree with Skip 100%. What you have is more than adequate. I also have the Gitzo 5 series tripod Tareq was recommending but that's because I use with the 500 f/4.

and i bought that 5-series Gitzo because i am sure i will get either 600 or 400 or at least 500, so i know what i need, but i can use my 5-series Gitzo for something else even it is overkill which is perfect then, so simple as that.

I do not have a 1DIII, but I use my 488 on a 1D classic or a 30D with grip and the 70-200 f/2.8ISL all the time with great luck.
