Has anyone had success with the China BP-511 knockoff batteries? Have you found an ebay seller that sells good ones that aren't going to show up dead, or die after the first use?

Here's the deal. I bought a pair of cheapo ebay batteries for my 20D only $14 shipped for two from an ebay seller called "eforcity". I've ordered cheap accessories from them in the past for cell phones and such, and never had any problems. Got both of the batteries in the mail; they charged up fine. I shot at least 600 shots, all without flash over a period of a month. I also reviewed them a lot on the LCD. They finally died. I go to charge the first one, after taking it out of my battery grip. It says it's fully charged after 5 minutes. CRAP this thing must be bad. The 2nd battery took a charge just fine, after a few hours like it should.

I notice the bad one will still give me about 100 shots, but then when you try and charge it repeatedly, after a few minutes the light on the charger is solid again. I don't know, maybe I'll just keep it as an emergency spare in my bag - to get a few extra shots with at last resort.

I decided to buy another one off an ebay seller call "accstation" and it arrived "Dead on Arrival" - you're supposed to charge them initially, but it wouldn't even take a charge. CRAP. I'm out another $8. Now what should I try...more? Or should I get some Sterlingteks?

I love my Sterlingtek's, for my XTi though. Seems like they last even longer than my OEM canon one!

IMO get a reputable generic its only about 14 each its 7 bucks more but they are tried and true! :) (sterling tek to be specific)

Many have tried different ebay batteries with problems like yours, that is why the recommendation is sterlingteks as they seem to be the best quality.

Personally I bought some non-sterlingteks way back when and they still work great to this day, sadly they have NO branding at all and the ebay store I bought them from is long gone (got 2 for $12 or something like that).

Thanks for all the quick responses! I appreciate it guys. Keep them coming. If I can find a seller that has reliable batteries other than Sterlingtek, it will save me a little bit. Otherwise I might as well just order a couple from there.

I did read that sometimes Sterlingteks are a little mis-sized, and are a tight squeeze. Has anyone else found this to be true?

I have a couple of batteries that are branded as "Powwer" that I use with my 400D. They claim to be 1700mah, but I've not noticed if they last significantly longer than the OEM battery - they're certainly as good though.

They came from http://stores.ebay.co.uk/FLASH-CAMERA - a well respected supplier of all things Canon DSLR related in the UK...
