Got my 20D 3 weeks and it got locked up the other night and wouldn't take any pictures. I have firmware 1.0.5. I called Canon support and they tried a few things and we couldn't get it to work. I just sent it into Canon Service center yesterday. I am very dissapointed with getting a new 20D and it didn't last. I hope what ever they do it works permanently.
PS, glad that the forum is up and running again. I missed it a lot.

yes, despite what some people may tell you lock-ups are still going on.
I had a minor lock-up today with the new firmware, so lets hope canon don't just bung that on your camera and say its all okay now http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

My 20D came with the 1.0.5 built in and it has locked up once. I was changing a lens at an assignment and it just died. Luckily I knew what was happening and what the solution was so it wasn't that much of a deal, although I had to remove the camera from a bracket to get at the batteries in the vertical grip.
I brought it to Canon Canada's attention and I got a pretty snotty email reply, along the lines of, "Well we fixed the problem, so if yours doesn't work it's something else. Send it to us." When I asked if they would be paying the courier charge both ways for a week old camera, I didn't hear back from them.
Then again these are the same people who specifically told me that any flash would trigger a Canon Wireless Slave (it won't); and fixed my 10D's terrible battery drain problem but then denied fixing anything. They did send me an extra battery back with the unrepaired (but repaired) camera, so that was nice although almost certainly inadvertant. And now they dismiss the lockup problem. But I'd bet money that they will revisit this once Canon Japan (or USA) sorts it out with yet another firmware update.
Being a little paranoid I've wondered if the lastest firmware update might address the lockup problems, without mentioning it. In any case I doubt if the matter will be completely cured until you can do the update without having to remove the lens.

I've had one of the very first 20D's, from September, and I've used firmware 1.02, 1.04, 1.05, 1.10, and in hundreds and hundreds of shots it's been flawless.
Funny thing is, lockups occur on all of the Canon DSLR's (and probably all brands). It's not just a 20D problem.
While my 20D has been flawless, I had 2 lockups with the 300D when I owned it, and I've seen others post about lockups with the 10D, 1D, 1DMKII...
I really feel bad for those that it does happen to. But I just wanted to point out this isn't specifically a 20D problem.

Every dSLR I have had has locked up at one time or another. D60, 10D, Drebel, MKII. The only camera so far that has not locked up on me (yet) is my 20D.
These are computers with lenses attached. Schtuff happens. Reboot. Move on.

While I understand what you're saying, I don't think we should just sit back, take the lock-ups and "move on".
Using your argument, you could also say that cars are computers with wheels (heck, some cars have multiple computers in them!). Imagine if you bought a brand new BMW, it kept cutting out randomly and the dealer told you that if this happened to get out of the car, disconnect the battery, reconnect it and start the engine and just drive on!
I think you'd get fed up pretty quickly!
Canon's QA needs a bit of attention I think. THEY designed and manufactured the camera and the lenses so you'd think they would all work together, without lockups or any other issues. For the money we're paying for all this gear, I think that's the least we can expect!
Oh, and while we're on quality issues - by BRAND NEW, 1 day old 70-200 lens is with the Canon repair centre at the moment with a focusing issue... *sigh!*

Some people just have no luck I guess. 99.8% of my Canon gear has performed flawlessly. The extreme few times I have had a camera lockup is because I was hot-swapping lenses or something similar.
I have not had any computer issues with my cars, but I do know some people that have. Nice analogy though...

I agree with you 100% on this. My 300D locked up twice, but my 20D has never locked up.
It happens, and when it did with my 300D, it was frustrating, but I wasn't overly concerned. I do wish the best of luck to everyone with their new equipment though.
Sometimes when we spend lots of money on things, we do have really high expectations( I'm really bad for this).
But even BMW's break down on occasion.

My 300D has locked up a few times. My 20D has never locked up on me and I bought way back around Sept or early Oct. I had the first firmware and then upgraded to the 1.0.5 and it has never locked up.

I own a 20D since september now, and I never faced a lockup. A friend's of mine has continuous problem with lock-up.
He sent 20D to Canon (in Italy) and they say that 20D is ok and they assert that problem is in lens. In fact he uses Sigma (don't remember which ones) and Canon technician says that they would change firmware in Sigma lens ! I'm really astonished, but this is what they say.
I use only Canon L lens and 50mm or 85mm and never lock-up.
So it seems that another firmware must be monitored !! Sigh
