ok.. so today I went out to take pictures of a friends daughter for prom with her gf's...no pics yet...sorry.

anyways.. there were SOOOOOO many photogs out there with 30D's/40D's and 1 5D.

normally my federal income tax refund is about $3000-$3500.

I'm not sure about "at least" a 40D. I've had the 30D and 40D and, to be honest, I miss the 30D. I'd consider both if I were you. I'd love to have a 5D some day, but then I'd have to re-think all my lens purchases and I don't want to go there again any time soon! LOL. ;)

I hear ya on the lens thing... I think the only lens I have now that you be nice on the 5D is my Nifty Fifty... of course, I won't be able to buy toys as frequent but the quality of what I buy will be by far much better. I'd love to one day have that body with nothing but L's and L-primes.

So.. I think I'll continue making my XTi gear complete this year. hold off til next for my upgrade. if I do so, the 5D will hopefully come down in price with some upcoming newer bodies and I'll make my final decision then. Will more than likely be the 5D w/ flash, 10-22 UWA and battery grip.

5D isn't compatable with EF-S lenses (which is what the 10-22 is), you'd need the EF 16-35mm

Battery Grip - should be in the mail tomorrow
EX430 Flash - will be ordering within the next month

Ah -- My brother has the XT + grip and other than not going to ISO3200 it is every bit as good as the 30D, and smaller.

I might recommend skipping the 430 flash and grabbing a used 5x series instead. There's a pretty big difference in power.

I am not sure when your tax season is coming around but that is what I voted for. I would get the combo with the 24-105 lens. You can wait on the grip. Though it is nice. Flash is a must.

You can always pick up a used 40D and sell it at tax time and not lose much if any money on it.

My Bad. You just made it sound like you wanted to get a 10-22mm for your future 5D. Just didnt want you to be dissapointed.

$3500 can buy alot of nice glass for the XTi, id rather invest in glass that will be good for awhile than an expensive body, you really havent made a case for yourself in why you need to upgrade your body besides keeping up with the Jones at the prom that had the 5D/40D's and you "only having a rebel"

well... there isn't a huge enough difference in the price of the 2 to make me want the lesser.

besides... if I get the 580 now, then when it comes time for the better non-rebel body, i'll already have it. I'm so smart:lol:


I'm still not w00t w00t on buying $3500 in glass for my XTi... I think I'll just get a few more accessories for it now and leave the full $3500 for the 5D or the 40D with more L glass

Doc is right, get the 5D and the 24-105 that comes in a kit if that is what you need. The 24-105 will be a wonderful, very useful lens. And 24mm is plenty wide on a 5D. The 40D is not a P&S either. I use it as a second camera, not a back up, as a second. It is not the same in many ways, buttons are placed differently, the LCD menu is different, so if you have both, it can be confusing. But the 40D produces very nice images, better than I expected. I'm very happy with it. But if I can only bring one camera to an event, where I am the primary shooter, it's the 5D. It's just my favorite.

Oh, I agree. I own a 30D and I love it! It goes with me everywhere. Just upgrade the glass. You will save money AND have a great lens as well!h
