Hello all, new to the forums. I just took my new 10D out for the first time today and need a place to host some pics to show off a bit. Where is a good site to use, preferably free :) THX

First of all, you might want to check with your ISP. Often they give you X megabytes of web space along with your email account. It is simple to publish your own web site with your own photos. Mine has never been accused of being classy, but it is functional.

Otherwise, you have to find a host and get your own domain name, or else you can find a host with a domain already present.

In many cases, the free host will have advertising or other crap riding over your photos, so it might be worth paying some money for something cleaner. It kind of depends on whether you intend to post five photos, or five hundred.

Pbase.com is great ! It's not free, but for only $23 per year you get 200MB of photographs storage along with many cool features, like automatic EXIF display, batch files upload (you can upload ZIP file full of pictures and the site will automatically unzip and put them in the desired gallery - so convenient, instead of uploading file-by-file), CSS styles etc. Highly recommended !

Or, check my link below & give them a try. The site is free, usually up, & very little advertising.

I will second the vote for pbase.com even though its not free. At $23 per year or less than $2.00 a month you can't go wrong. I have over 200 photos there in 18 different galleries.

Public Domain???? That doesn't sound very good, unless you want to give everything away.

It depends if you are making money from the pictures you put up or not.

Personally, at the stage I am at, I could care less if someone uses one of my photos, although I do appreciate the credit for it.
If I were making money from this, I would use a host that allowed me the power to post and delete my images as I see fit, and watermark anything I did not want to become public domain.

The reality of the Internet is anything you put up is "free game", although it is not legal, or ethical.

I'm new to this, but I was reading some reviews and www.smugmug.com has a lot of feautres, and they have 3 diferent user options, one from 30usd the basic one, then is a power user for 50usd, and then a pro user for 100usd, all of them with unlimited space and you can upload hi res images.

Anyone know about smugmug? or have an account there?

Tinypic.com - If you just want to host the odd picture. Smugmug.com if you want all the bells and whistles, its cheap enough and the extra money you could have spent could be invested in beer!

I know of a great service that isn't free, but well worth the small $30 yearly fee. I am a veteran smugmug user and I wouldn't use any other service, mostly because of the many features and ease of use. During my trips to Europe and Africa, all I do when my camera's memory card is full is literally find an internet cafe, upload, and go - smugmug does the rest! This not only frees up my memory card, but lets folks back home see the places I've been while I'm on the go! If you're not convinced, check it out for yourself: http://www.smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com/?referrer=sL2HLom4aoVlQ). You can even save $5 using the coupon sL2HLom4aoVlQ !

Never give your images over to public domain. Someone is using the site to gather images for free use. Geez.
