Hello,

I seem to get this issue more often than not. When I take pictures with flash I get round dots on my pictures. Is this a camera defect? Why does it happen? If it is not a camera defect what can I do to not let this ruin my pictures? It totally ruins my shots.. Any input would be great.

An example picture I took with this issue is at:

Thanks!

Hi relux

I guess that little dots in your picture are little pieces of dust or particles in the air, water, or something else in the air that night, so when you use flash at night shots you will get a "freeze" image, including the reflection of this flash in this little particles in the air, causing this dots to appear in your picture.
So, this is only a guess, but sounds true to myself, maybe another can tell us or give us a better explanation.

Do you try to take that picture with a tripod, without flash?

It looks like lens flare, or reflections of dust.

How clean is your lens?

I guess I am not sure how to tell how dirty or clean my lens is. :/

Turn the camera around and look at it ;)

Yea yeah.. I mean as to what "dirty" is. There is a smudge on it.. but thats it. The camera is relatively new..

Lens flare. It's quite common when there's a light source in or near the field of view. Basically, it's a bright light causing reflections off the lens elements.

Do certain cameras deal with this better? So the resolution would be to watch for bright lights?

Some of the more expensive lenses have more elaborate multi-coating to reduce reflections that cause lens flare. Using a lens hood will help keep stray light (from outside the picture area) from striking the lens and contributing to flare. But if the light source is actually in the frame, you're very likely to get flare.
