Hi, I am new on the forum. Has anybody used a Canon 22-55 f4-5.6 USM lens on a EOS20D? This came out for the APS SLR Canon camera. It could double up as a good standard zoom (35-88). Thanks.

Bucko,

first of all, welcome to the forum!

do you own the lens or do you plan to buy it?

In the second case, best wait and hear some more opinions on it.
A lot of good lenses are discussed here regularly, and this one has never come up.
The common observation is that Canon consumer grade lenses (like the 'kit lenses' 28-80 or so) perform less than optimal on Canon DSLR's.

Best regards,
Andy

Andythaler, I own the lens, it came out in '99. I had it on my EOS50e as a W/A. I am waiting delivery of a EOS20D

Well, then you're going to find out soon
Congratulations on your new toy, you'll love it!

Tell us how the lens works out!

As stated, DSLR's obviously are more demanding of lenses than normal film ... if the lens should not be up to your expectations, you might consider picking up the 28/2.8 and 50/1.8 ... great sharp lenses with less-than-optimal build quality but at a great price point.

Other than that ... try out your new camera, read the forum and make up your mind what you'll spend your money on next time ... sooner rather than later once the bug really has bitten you...

Best regards,
Andy

Thanks Gramps, that is very encouraging about what to expect from that lens. I guess al I need now is a decent 15 or 17 mm for W/A, say like a Tokina prime. Any thoughts on that? Thanks, Bucko .

I had one recently so (of course) had to do loads of comparison tests with it (...where are the smilies gone)

I've deleted them now but i remember the 22-55 being quite bad at one end-i think it was the long end
...while at the other end it was about equal with the EFs 18-55

Ill see if i kept the pics on CD

Bucko,

there are a lot of threads in the forum on the Tokina ATX 17/3.5 Pro, as DRisley has been making people aware of this great lens recently. Still, if the 22-55 works well on the wide end, get the 1.8/50 to also cover the long end. Maybe getting the kit lens would not be a bad idea, either, because it is very cheap for the image quality it offers.

Best regards,
Andy
