I went to the Formula Drift competition at Road Atlanta Saturday and captured the following shots. I still have a headache from breathing all the rubber smoke and my camera bag still smells! These shots are straight out of the camera in size, no cropping has been done except to last shot and just a little unsharp masking to all.
Enjoy! CC always welcome!

too fast of shutter speed, lower it down to 1/200 or lower

maybe a bit of fine tweaking of the levels.

Beautiful cars and great POV but I agree about the shutter being to fast. A little motion blur or tire spin would make a big difference. Maybe check the wind direction next time so you stay out of the tire smoke.

Doug: did you catch Kyle Marcelli's huge crash in the F2000 race on Friday with your camera?

Yeah, I knew that I was getting stop action on the tires but I really didn't want to push it too much since I was doing a shoot for a website(see:cash money). I was scared I'd end up with blurry shots and not just wheel blur. I'm not completely comfortable shooting motorsports yet to push the envelope with $$ on the line just to get wheel blur but I do know it would enhance the shots tremendously! Still working on mastering that!
FYI-None of the shots I've posted here were packaged for the website and I was given permission to do what I pleased with any shots above the 300 they wanted.

As for the smoke, if I'd have moved from the smoke I'd have been shooting into the sun, and we all know what kind of problems that can cause. Next time I'll take an oxygen mask just in case! Plus this position was about 20-30 feet from the track so I knew it'd be a great spot to get good close-ups from.

Was it Kyle that crashed near the drift course? I saw it but wasn't shooting pictures at that time. I was in non photographer mode and just trying to keep myself hydrated before going to work.....and sucking up shade! it was a little warm out there!

What website were you shooting for?

even at 1/160th, you'll get some motion blur, but still have 3/5 of your shots in focus. I missed most of the practice sessions, only shot 1-2 shots during qualifying runs and 3-5 shots during tandem runs and still walked away with 1100 photos.

Drifting is an exciting, loud, fast, in-your-face sport. These shots make it look like a Disneyland ride with a fog machine.

^hahahahaha
JacboPhoto was a bit harsh but I agree. Drifting isn't fast but it's about the motion and movement of the slide as well.
I agree a slower shutter would have helped these be perfect.
