Any chance the discontinuation means a new version is coming out soon? What are the chances?

Nah i dont think its a discontinuation as they do recieve some stock of the lens. It just sells out really fast as they dont recieve a large amount.

I was wondering the same thing. I wanna pull the trigger on this lens but not if its discontinued.

I was wondering the same thing. I wanna pull the trigger on this lens but not if its discontinued.
Why? It's a fantastic lens regardless of a bad business decision. If it is discontinued its value will stay higher on the used market unless it's replaced by something much better and cheaper.

Not for Nikon - must be mistake
No. It's not "discontinued," but on back order from the manufacturer. It means that B&H ran out of stock, and the manufacturer has to build a new batch of lenses. That's what happened with this lens for Canon EOS recently. It was out of stock at B&H and Adorama for two to three weeks. I waited two and one-half weeks until B&H restocked its shelves.
The 11-16 is a hot item right now, and some shops are asking around $700.00 for it, but since B&H and Adorama have a lot better price for it, I didn't mind waiting nearly three weeks.

Some people wonder why anyone would want a fast wide angle lens. Here's a night shot I took last week showing the green and red hues of the northern lights on the horizon... The f/2.8 aperture reduces your exposure time and keeps the stars from streaking due to their movement.

I use a regular CPL with no issues at all. The only time I get vignetting with it on is if I have the CPL AND the GND filter holder mounted at the same time. With that combo the vignetting goes away at 12.5mm.

In fact I also did not know whether to go for regular or slim on my Xt. But the reason I bought slim CPL filter was to get more usable zoom length of this wonderful lens in case if I shift to FF (which is going to happen any time now). :)

Do you need a slim filter? for UV filters I noticed that the slim doesn't matter. I also googled this and most people say regular thickness UV filters should be fine and don't cause vignetting. I got a Hoya HD anyway, but since Hoya HDs are slightly slimmer than regular filters, I figured it'd be better. Now I think I get worse vignetting on my 17-55 (uses B+W F-Pro) than on my 11-16. Maybe it's time to swap filters.

In all seriousness I use my Tokina all the time for landscapes. Here's one I took handheld, just to see if I could do it that way. Didn't work out well either - definitely need to bring my tripod next time.

Alex, did you use a regular tripod or did you have an equatorial mount that subtracts the earth's rotation?
ions
8th of September 2010 (Wed), 13:21
I doubt there's an equatorial mount for a 30 second exposure, if one zoomed in they'd be able to see faint star trailing. It's because of the wideness of the lens that it is less apparent.

Alex, did you use a regular tripod or did you have an equatorial mount that subtracts the earth's rotation?
Used a regular ultra-cheap'o chinese tripod from Deal Extreme. You can start to see the star trails if you zoom at 100%, but at 11mm it is really small.
I tried to do the same photo with the 50mm f/1.4, but the star trails were way too long.

Does anyone have a lens profile for this lens to use in either Camera Raw or Lightroom 3? I saw in the most recent update of Lightroom 3.2 Adobe added a ton of lens profiles but I did not find one for this Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. If Adobe does not have one released, has anyone created one? If so where can I download it? It would make my post processing so much faster and easier to have a lens correction profile for this lens.

Thanks for the complements! :) A tripod was used as both shots were around 1 second and and fully stopped down to f22. Not the sharpest aperture for this lens but without a ND filter it was the only way I could get some motion in the water. The small aperture and a mild breeze contributed to these not being quite as sharp as they could be but they turned out well regardless. I applied a couple of GND filters in Lightroom but nothing drastic, mostly to tame the harsh highlights in the treetops of the first picture.

Thanks, but don't be too in awe. At some point while doing that shoot I must have hit the focus ring cause they're kinda soft. Normally I set it to infinity and leave it, but I was moving around a lot and I guess I hit the ring... They could have been great shots. Lesson learned, go slow and keep an eye on your settings!

Those were taken roughly three hours north of Toronto. The town providing the light pollution is Huntsville, where the G20 was held earlier this year. It is to the south, turn my back and point the camera in a more northerly/straight up direction and I got that Milky Way shot. I let the lens down because I do have some sharp star shots using it except I wasn't at a location with such a good night sky.
