Wow! Better focusing, quieter motor better glass and better coatings.
I wonder if the glass and coating changes are intended to reduce flare.

I had the same thought about a week ago, so I did a quick check. I could be wrong, but I believe that's the list price and it's the same as the list price of the first generation.

I was wondering how well this lens works on a FF body as apposed to a Crop Sensor body. Or will it even work on a FF body... I'll be looking back through this thread to see if I can find any FF shots with this lens.

Edit: My research tells me it's for a Crop Sensor camera. Which leads me to the final resolution that I don't need it. I have the Sigma 10-20mm and I am perfectly happy with it on my 40D. It's a shame neither one will work with a FF camera.

Ah, I didn't know that you could do that with the Sigma since I never heard of someone doing it. What happens if you shoot it at 10mm? Does it leave a huge vignette or does the mirror hit?

Two things make this great for astro work: f2.8 and it's not EF-S.

The wide aperture means you can get twice the exposure before trailing kicks in. Which means you can capture more stars.

Because it's not EF-S you can use a clip-in filter to remove light. Here's a comparison -

This won't give you fisheye looks. Objects at the corners appear stretched and greatly distorted.

If you want a fisheye look, you need to buy a fisheye lens. This is not the same thing as an ultra-wide angle lens.

just a heads up if anyone is thinking of buying one. DWI has them on sale for $549 Aussie with priority shipping (you might need to confirm if that's covers outside Australia) Not sure how this compares to be honest, I just went there to order a new body and saw it on their front page. The shop is legit, I have bought 2 lenses and a flash from them in 3 separate orders and I can't complain about their service. their "priority shipping" takes 4 days max to my door with insurance.

hmmm looking at a sigma 12-24 might sell my canon 15mm 2.8 for a tokina 11-16 again i love these lenses i know its redundant to have 11-16 and a 12-24 but for each lens is a use and great for video for FF

i've been using it full frame for years now.

nearly sold it and went with something else a few times, but i keep coming back to the fact that it is an 11mm rectilinear lens when zoomed out.

yes, there is a heavy/hard natural vignette, but it's 11 stinking mm! lol.

if the circular format bothers you it can be cropped square leaving only a bit of the corners cut off.

Just got this lens and I have a quick question. The lens hood that came with my copy is model BH-77B. It seems to sit askew a bit and I can see the hood in the frame when I zoom out to 11mm. Is this the right hood? I've seen online that it should be a BH-77A.

Just wanted to ping the crowd and see what you guys have. I've already e-mailed Tokina's US support to find out more from them.

Lemme see if i can get some pics of this thing. I've got the hood turned until it locks into place and it looks like it still needs to go about 5-10 more degrees for the hood petals to be squarely in place.

that's it exactly. 15mm is always 100% good, no hard vignette. 14mm is just the tiniest hint of dark corners.

a few times i've just taped the zoom right at the 14mm mark and left it there.

now, is the corner sharpness right at 14mm gonna be like a canon 14/2.8/v2? or even a samyang 14/2.8? no, since it's so at the fringe of the image circle. a few landscape guys i know use those two lenses because of that, but for my purposes it's fine.

This lens isn't as resistant to lens flaring like some other, more expensive lenses are. This means that at certain angles, shooting at a light source, you will get a flare showing up in the photo, which usually looks like a streak, or some other anomaly. These are usually fixable in post-processing, or you simply learn to shoot around it.

Here is a shot that I posted awhile back from Grand Teton National Park. The flare isn't always bad. As long as you know it has this issue, you can work around it, or with it, like I did in this shot.

I got this lens a little over a month ago and I have been loving it! There seems to be a crap ton of purple color fringing on this lens when pointed at anything that is bright, which kind of blows, but overall it is still great.
