Hood Vignetting! At least it wasn't my lens hood. This was taken through the blower cutout of the tilt forward hood on this rod. This lens is still new to me and I'm amazed at how wide it is.

I didn't notice that when I took the shot, but did when I was processing. There is some perspective distortion which I assumed was normal with lenses this wide. Correct me if I'm wrong as I've had this lens for less than a month. Thanks!

I have to assume distortion is all that could cause that, but I've never had that happen to me while using this lens. Weird.

That's a fancy way of saying this lens is so awesome that it makes it 'look' like the wheels are pointed outwards. (When in actuality they're facing inward! /madeup)

after reading a bunch of great reviews on this lens, and all the awesome shots from this thread... i gave in and ordered the Tokina 11-16!!!
Just received it on Saturday and wow what a great lens... it certainly lives up to all the good review and OMG this thing is WIDE...
sharp images even at 2.8!!!
I'm still learning the lens and will post some pictures once I get some decent shots!!! :D

Just used it a whole bunch at F2.8 and a bit at F4. While all the others can do that, if I had to shoot at F2.8 I would have. It's not to have the option but I had a stable rail to hold the camera down for F4.

Thanks for the compliments. Besides photography, flying a B767 is my other hobby. ;)
I picked up this lens because I wanted the fast aperture for low light flight deck shots. Even with the f/2.8 I sometimes need to use ISO 3200.
Too much flash tends make the instrument panel look "dead" because the screens go dark.

Something that's thin, and multi-coated. I run a B+W Kaesemann, which is kind of thick, but still seems to work fine. Thin is better for a UWA lens. Spend the money on a better brand like Hoya, B+W or Heliopan.

View isn't the best from my room, but the stairwells are open with no windows obstructing your view in the rainbow tower. Went up to 31 and tried to do some long exposure shots at night but left my remote in the room! I'm here for a couple more days doing some computer work so I'll try again before I leave. I've been using my toki for one month now! Its absolutly amazing. Some days, I even use it as a walk around lens!
Im thinking about buying a CPL filter for my precious lens, but I have heard that using a polariser with an UWA can cause an ugly banding effect that becomes visible in skies.
Can someone be so kind and tell me more about this? I really dont want to risk wasting my money on a filter that is "useless" for my lens.

looks like a great lens, super wide with awesome detail. How does it perform on aps-c body?
It's designed for an APS-C body, so 99% of the pictures you're seeing in this thread were taken using APS-C bodies. It performs great.

Just got this thing last week. Went on a long hike to "try it out" hehehe....I love it. Amazing lens. Build quality is as good as a Canon "L" series. Image quality is amazing. Focus is fast and accurate (the motor is high pitched but it doesn't sound "cheap").
Flare issues are overblown in my opinion. You can cause it but you really have to be trying. In this picture the sun is actually behind one of the leaves on the right hand side lol. Color reproduction is flat out awesome on this thing.

Rebel XSI. :) I love the XSI but I'd like to get a 7d at some point as well and use the Rebel for a backup or for a more compact body when size matters (errrr that sounds bad lol).
As for where to get the lens. I don't know for your state. I didn't order mine off of the internet. Most places seem to be out of stock.
However if you are in the Portland Oregon area you are in luck. I got mine at Pro Photo Supply last week. Was $599. Funny story actually:
I went in to look around. Browsed around a bit and was looking at their lens selection for any deals--browsing through the used gear, etc...As I'm looking around a I see a Tokina 11-17mm fisheye in it's box nestled between some Tamron and Canon lenses behind the display glass.
I ask the associate if they have any other Tokina lenses, specifically the 11-16mm. (If anyone ever goes in there look for the asian gentleman: he *extremely* helpful every time I go in, knowledgeable, and will spend as much time with me as I need, including even getting bodies and flashes and helping me take test shots etc!).
He says nah I don't think so but let me check and see what the computer says. He is like "hmmmm, you shoot Canon isn't that right? I show that we do have one but I think it may be inaccurate--let me look around."
He opens up the cabinet where the lenses are and starts poking around--nothing. Seems they don't have it. Then he's like ehhh for you let me dig around a little bit more. Goes over to another cabinet where it wouldn't normally be and digs around--finds not one, but TWO brand new Canon mount copies behind a bunch of other stuff. Hands one to me and hands me a Canon body to try it with tells me to go walk around and play with it for a while then let him know. I check focusing, etc, and the rest is history.
Cliff notes: There should still be one copy left at Pro Photo Supply in Portland!

Here is a post that explains the "banding" http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7548730&postcount=458
And here are two examples using a Hoya HD polarizer. You can see some banding in the second photo. It really isn't that much of a problem.

I've found the focusing speed to be quite the opposite. That's always been one of my gripes with this lens. Luckily the type of usage it sees doesn't really necessitate a quick focus.

As far as why would you use an UWA for sports, it gives a very dramatic and different perspective.
These were taken shortly after I received my 11-16, right at the end of the basketball season. I've been trying to get some volleyball stuff with the 11-16, but our local team is very young and there's not much face to face action happening at the net.
We host the divisional tournament in November, and I'm using the regular season to play with a few new angles and possibilities.

This is an issue of dynamic range. Your camera is not able to record all the detail needed for perfect highlights and dark areas in situations with such starch contrast. The solution to this, is to use either a Graduated Neutral Density Filter (GND), blend exposures via layers in photoshop, or mix multiple exposures into one 'High Dynamic Range' (HDR) photo. Most people go with GND filters and HDR. HDR will require another photo editing program. I think that most people use photomatix.

Wait! I think the photo you posted is fine. The reason it sort of has a washed out pale look is because the sun is in the frame and it sort of has some flare. It just has really low contrast. It's not a dynamic range issue in that photo (or at least not one that *needs* hdr)! If you have photoshop you have all you need to turn that photo into a great one. Take the raw, pull up some of the shadow areas, apply graduated exposure adjustment if you really feel like it, add some local contrast enhancement, etc. If you don't have photoshop look into getting paint.net or the gimp. Not every landscape photo needs to be HDR. HDR is way overused. The other guy above who's photos are so amazing--his photos aren't amazing because he took hdr ones or because of photomatix. They are amazing because he's obviously an amazing photographer. If he'd posted some non HDR shots I guarantee we'd still be blown away. Anyway, last shot I promise. Bridal Veil falls:

Hmm that is true.. I can also using some burn to make the sky darker as well.. I don't really want the whole picture anymore contrasty because it really darkens the people in the distance.. I guess Im just more concerned that when viewed 100% its a little pixely.. but maybe thats because of the harsh sunlight?..

FWIW, I really enjoy Photomatix (http://www.hdrsoft.com/) for exposure blending an HDR creation- it's cross-platform (OSX / Windows)
Also, as woos said, with a little bit of help from photoshop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/) / gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) / paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/) / my personal favorite, Lightroom (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/)
you can really make this photos colors and contrast much better. (The composure is great!)
Here's my "5-minute" version - you could spend an hour tweaking this image to get it looking just right :p
http://images.charlesrichards.net/d/92623-4/IMG_4477_001.jpg
Here's what I did:
Increase brightness of whole image slightly
Increase saturation of the image
Increase black levels slightly
using layers, decrease exposure on the sky and lake
using another layer, bump up the exposure on the sidewalk
using another layer, bump up the exposure on the treeline
A little googling for "photoshop layers" will get you pointed in the right direction for editing images that have a very high contrast in them like this.
When shooting a scene like this, I generally will expose "for the sky" (or slightly under-expose the sky), and then bring up the exposure of the foreground details in post processing - this is exactly what I've done to your image as well.
Cheers!

using layers, decrease exposure on the sky and lake
using another layer, bump up the exposure on the sidewalk
using another layer, bump up the exposure on the treeline
A little googling for "photoshop layers" will get you pointed in the right direction for editing images that have a very high contrast in them like this.
When shooting a scene like this, I generally will expose "for the sky" (or slightly under-expose the sky), and then bring up the exposure of the foreground details in post processing - this is exactly what I've done to your image as well.
Cheers!
Thanks for the tips and the edit it looks really great!! :).. I took a stab at doing something with it in photoshop.. heres my result:

Nice edits . I was not being a smartass as I was really wondering how you can take that kind of shot without hurting your eyes ?

Well, the aperture must be stopped down quite a bit because of the resulting star pattern on our favorite star (the sun). Perhaps the photo was framed while holding down a DOF preview button... (Just a guess)

Oh sorry, didn't mean to miss your question.. Im not really sure lol.. I guess just looking through the lens felt like wearing a pair of sunglasses and then I just tried to focus my eyes in the middle of the picture "not the sun". Just don't look directly into the sun and they shouldn't hurt :)

Picked up a used Tokina 11-16 this afternoon.... managed to find it for AUD$610 which is just slightly less than half what I was quoted for a new one and has apparently only been used 5 times and is still under warranty!
I'm going to go for a walk and take some shots now! :)

Mine arrived this morning. Not taken any pictures yet but I'm very happy with the feel and mechanics of it!
I thought I'd ask, is there anything I should check or look out for in photo's to make sure I have a good copy?

Does anyone have this lens with a CPL? I was looking at getting a B+W Kaeseman Slim 77mm CPL for this because of the supposed vignetting on the regular sized CPL near the 11mm end. Can anyone confirm this? The price difference is negligible, so I'd rather get the regular sized filter for the convenience. The slim filter seems kind of a pain to deal with. I will be using the lens on a 40D if that matters at all.

I use the regular Kaeseman CPL on mine, and if I were you I'd go with the slim version.

OK. As a follow-up question for those with the slim version, what do you guys do with the provided lens cover? Is there anyway to keep it on securely? Are there any aftermarket covers that are better suited?

My lens cap fits on just fine with the normal version of that CPL. I don't see why the slim one would be any different.

A lot (or all?) of the slim filters don't have the threads on the inside of the ring of the filter to allow a lens cap to fit.

I've read many user reviews saying that the slim one has cap issues. There's no threading in the front so you can't just use a traditional lens cap.

Correct. I don't think any thin filters allow the use of a cap. I know my B&W CPs do not.

So what do you do to protect the filter?

I have the 77mm Kaessaman(sp) slim CPL. It doesn't have threads, so I take it on and off everytime I put my lens away. It's kind of a pain in the ass, but its a great filter.
