I'm looking for a ND Gray filter for this lens, but I've heard that it needs to be a thin one or otherwise it will leave black borders to the sides. Also, I'm on a tight budget for now, so the expensive ones is out of bounds. Do you have any recommendations?

Naturalist
3rd of January 2010 (Sun), 16:20
Save your $$$ until you can afford the more expensive filter. There is no quicker way to ruin image quality and introduce tons of aggravation than by putting a cheap filter in front of your lens.

Ok. No cheap ones then. But still, I need some information about suitable ND Gray filters for this lens.

Definitely one of my favorite lenses. Does anyone know if it causes vignetting on a FF body? I hear it's okay above 14mm. If not, I'll just end up selling it, as I would like to upgrade to FF.

Might as well go with the 16-35/2.8 if you're going FF.

Is it generally accepted that the Tokina 11-16 is the crop UWA IQ zoom king as is the Canon 16-35mm for FF ?

This is what is seems like to me... especially if you look at the pictures.

Yay! Picked mine up today! It's been said a pile of times that the build quality is great so I won't repeat that even though it still is. For anyone in Southern Ontario, Duncan & Wright have two copies going for $780, each of course - not where I got mine, I paid a tiny bit more at another local place. Hopefully I'll have a shot or two to post tonight. :) Liking it so far though.

The Tokina116 is usable on FF at 15-16mm - but in the end I got rid of it. most people upgrading to FF will get a 17-40 to replace their UWA needs. (not me though, I don't use UWA enough)

I still have the original raw files, but I think I messed up on some sort of save for web option on that one... It's from the same shooting date as the ones above and below it. I'll look in my catalog tonight and update this.
Unfortunately I processed some of these right before I upgraded my flickr account, so they aren't full resolution up there. That means I probably have to redo them to get them to full res (since I just saved for 1024px wide now...).
Anyway, my PP skills have improved since then, so maybe that's a good thing :D

:D

In case you didn't already know (and assuming you have photoshop), you can select the ruler tool and draw a line tracing the horizon. Then go to "image" tab on top and "rotate image" and go to arbitrary and it'll automatically rotate the image (CW or CCW) to make the horizon leveled. Doesn't take but 2 seconds if that.

I don't enjoy PP'ing much but with certain images, I feel it's worth the effort. :) Just my opinion naturally.

I don't have Photoshop (Linux user), I know how to do it with Gimp, although I don't know if that method is possible in Gimp. You have posted many images I admire, it is nice to read that they are achieved with minimal PP as I have minimal interest in doing that sort of thing.

Your lens set is similar to mine/the way I want mine to be. Just sayin.

Ah. I'm a PC, the inferior system. I use it because I've been using it since the days of DOS and it is the only system I'm comfortable using. So I get to use PS.

Thanks for the compliment on my photos. I am not a huge fan of PP'ing as well. I keep it as simple as I can. Most of my processing in Adobe Camera Raw =

1. Change from "Adobe Standard" to "Camera Standard"
2. Change "Luminous" noise reduction (depending on my iso)
3. Set my WB and up the contrast slightly.
4. Hit "Open" button to process and import into photoshop.

 Can't say that I've scratched much beyond the surface of RAW processing yet.

And if I need to fix my horizon, then I do so w/ the ruler tool. Then I resize (and sometimes apply a lil bit of USM sharpening) and throw on my signature action.

Rarely takes me more than 30 seconds a photo. But there are a few that I had to salvage from horrific user error. Those will take a bit longer. :)

I'm considering a new computer, a small macbook pro, just so I can use the usual stuff and upgrade my cameras firmware without much fuss but it's that or a 17-55 and I kinda want the lens more... Other than not being comfortable with the raw options in Linux I love it for everything else I do, a new computer seems a bit of a waste.

DPP has been much kinder to me with getting rid of CA from the 11-16. Supposedly DxO is even better, but I haven't tried it out.
In cases of emergency and necessity for maximum quality, DPP + export to 16 bit TIFF + lightroom will do for now.

a pity to use it as a prime lens btw

why?

it's not like it's got a huge zoom range that can no longer be used.

16mm on ff is wider than 11mm on crop. ;) (never mind 15mm.)

besides, what are you other options for ff 15 or 16mm @ f/2.8?

i agree.... i would personally use this lens as a UWA on FF if i needed F2.8 and just have it as a prime.... so much cheaper and the same results as a Canon 16-35.... which I might add costs a leg and a arm.

I used it at 15-16mm on a 5D Mark II a few times before I let it go... and not I have the 16-35II. If it is true that the 14-24L is coming out, that is where I am moving next. :-D

When I moved to 5D I wanted to use it as a prime, but in the end rarely used it (or even bring it with me on shoots) so I decided to let it go to fund my 24-105L.
I haven't bought a replacement yet, because I rarely need UWA. but will be probably looking for a used 17-40.

Plus, look into the bing.com cashback for additional savings on ebay purchases (it fluctuates, but think that it gives a rebate of 10% right now). Check www.cashbackr.com/cashback to get the current percentages.

shouldn't the first post of these kind of threads contain more information about the lens?
like if its for soap boxes or fullframe etc?
there should be a sticky thread which contains a static form, so every lens has the same table with it's specs...

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe future "Samples" threads could include such info.

Usually a lens is eagerly anticipated, frequently discussed, and over analyzed, as soon as it is announced. Once it appears to the general masses, you get this kind of thread with samples.

If you need more specs and info, you can probably find it in older "11-16" threads or in formal reviews.

Well, I only had my Tokie 11-16 with me yesterday, so I couldn't do much... but at home I got quite impressed by the amount of detail the 7D and the Tokie were able to capture in such an unusual circumstance.... and thanks of course to the Dragonfly that stayed still even with me almost touching it with the front element :p
